Convincing DH to camp?

I'm really keen to get the family out camping, my sister and all my friends going on about how great it is for the children has finally convinced me! DH is sceptical however- main things are children not sleeping (DS2 is 2yrs 3months and only just sleeping through most nights) and his sleeping comfort; plus he doesn't like the mentality of a lot of campers and caravanners (we spent nearly 3 months going round Oz in a campervan and the older caravanners were a touch annoying).

So, what could hopefully persuade him is more comfortable sleeping facilities and a decent campsite. DS1 and I slept in the garden the other night and he slept until 8 (normally he's up at 6.30ish), so that argument is hopefully sorted. Smile

We have 5cm thick self inflating mats- what would help make those more comfortable without too much stuff in the car? I find them ok but DH is 6ft2 and 17st so not many beds are comfortable for him.

In terms of campsites- we'd want a campsite that would allow campfires (fun) and not too manicured, but still have nice hot showers, good toilets, possibly electrical facilities to charge phones etc, maybe use our camping fridge. Plus not too far from home (Bristol) so we could test out short stays and be close to home in case we need to head back cold and wet! Not asking much eh? Grin

If we can get in to camping it would be great- DH loves going away for weekends but family rooms in hotels are so expensive, and even holiday homes for a weekend are really expensive these days. Neither of us come from camping families and have both been brought up to be very sceptical about camping!

What about renting a pod or a yurt or something fixed with beds to start with? If you've spent three months in a campervan you have proved you can rough it...this trip is all about discovering the fun again.

Take the best food you can afford. The sort of treats you have once in awhile at home. I find that happy tastebuds generally make a happy camper!

Make sure the kids have warm and dry clothes - not jeans they're a pain when you're camping. Take lots of fun toys that will keep the kids and hubby busy. If the kids are giggling he'll forget about everything else.

Yurts look great but more expensive than a B&B! Might be worth it to persuade him about campsites though Smile.

Boys will be very happy to live in tracksuit bottoms and they will all be more than happy just to take the football.

Just say your going without him. We had similar discussions. I bought a tent and booked a holiday...he came along and now we came 5 times a yer.

You don't need him, he will hate to miss out though.

Ha! I was just about to post what george said :o
DH swore he would never camp in the UK again after several wet trips away. We agreed recently on weekends only but neve quite got him into it so DS and I went on our own a couple times. DH stayed at home "in the comfort of his own home" but was obviously bored on his own and is now playing an active role in later trips :o

Well he's agreed to glamping in a few weeks when we meet up with my sister so I hope we can find somewhere nice. Of course this has lead to me coveting my own bell tent Grin.

Mentioned a site with furnished tipis and camping and he just said "why don't we just take our tent instead?".

Wonders will never cease.

Worried now as our tent is quite cosy for four, got it in Australia so more suited for their conditions than the UK. Let a little bit of rain in through the top vent because I couldn't get the bloody pole in it, will just have to take some duct tape to tape up the leaky zip if needed. Oh well, if it goes well we'll invest in something better. I really hope it goes well..,

I think the lure of a fire and lots of beers with BIL got to him.
