Best in-tent toys/amusements for early mornings and rainy days?

What toys/games would you recommend for a long-ish camping trip with DCs who are 4 and 6?

We will be taking lots of books as they love them, but I always get in a dither about what else to take, especially with limited car space. Obviously nothing with too many itty bits to get lost sorry DS, no lego... but is there anything you find particularly good?

Thank you!

Cheap craft kits. We were away at Easter with four children in that age range. It rained almost the whole of Easter Sundayand making Easter themed animals on sticks kept them all entertained for hours. I was astonished to be honest. they used them the next day to do a puppet show behind a windbreak too. Great value.

Also colouring in is quite good but may not last quite as long as there is no gluing and sticking involved.

Ooh see that's the sort of thing I would never have thought of doing in a tent, but now you've mentioned, it, can see what you mean! Though would have to keep the glue and itty bitty things locked up in between

Colouring stuff is already on the list, and general activity/sticker books as well as reading.

Pack of Snap cards.

Set of dominoes.

Any Orchard game.

happyland/little people/playmobil- making their campsite etc
loom bands
paper dolls/airplanes
simple board games like snakes and ladders
portable dvd player Wink

Thanks, more great ideas! Will have to ban Snap before 9ish though as they will be LOUD!

Paper planes is a genius one actually, DS has been given a whole ridiculously big book of them and it'll be a change from having them lying round the whole house. Only downside is he usually tries to get me to make them for him!

Ooh I thought of another one too, I bet the fuzzy felt would be good.

Pass the pigs always keeps them amused for hours.....
Last week it drew the kids on the campsite like the pied piper so not ideal if you don't like a gaggle:-)

jellyandsoup · 06/08/2014 11:01

Top trumps is good.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 06/08/2014 11:27

Not got pass the pigs, but we have got top trumps, good idea!

When they're a bit older try monopoly deal. Fab game but 4 is probably a bit little...

yellowdinosauragain · 07/08/2014 09:00

Our 2 like these books and this was great on our first family camping trip when they were a similar age to yours.

There are some really fun board games or card games that are much more portable than monopoly (and more fun imo).

Have you tried qwirkle? Or Forbidden Island? There are loads of good ones: Noé, croc, love letters, hanabi...

Great to play as a family as well

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 08/08/2014 09:08

We take uno, Qwirkle, pass the pigs, colouring/activity books and loom bands.

When my sis and I were small we always used to make a scrap book of our holiday. If the weather was bad we amused ourselves writing about what we'd seen and done, sticking in postcards/entry tickets etc or drawing our own illustrations. Kept us quiet for hours! We also had a couple of board games that we only played when camping so we weren't bored of them (Frustration was one, do they still make that? It was only small and had the die enclosed in a pop up dome so we couldn't lose it). Also played patience and Rummy my Nan cheated.
I now feel a bit sad I don't do these things with my own Dcs but ds has SLD and wouldn't be able to join in. Dd has always been happy with a book or some comics!

Pixel · 08/08/2014 20:11

Bored with them.

Yourfrenchiscrap · 08/08/2014 21:32

I do let DS take a smallish box of mixed Lego. He chooses a mixed lot and the rule is he tidies it away before he buggers off out! We also take Hama beads (there is an iron on site). I must be a glutton for punishment!
Apart from that a pack of cards, top trumps and lots of colouring things. A pad of tracing paper has been a massive hit here this year.

yellowdinosauragain · 11/08/2014 22:57

Bodeccia monopoly deal is a totally different game to monopoly and very portable -www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001RA3GWQ?pc_redir=1407569965&robot_redir=1

I can second the recommendation for forbidden island though!
