Hate sleeping bags - suggestions for alternatives

Hi all

I get quite claustrophobic in 'mummy' sleeping bags and am one of those people who likes to stick my feet out of the duvet to cool them down.

I'm about to go camping and wondered what people could suggest that doesn't make me feel completely constrained, but will keep me warm. Does a double square sleeping bag work? Kingsize?

We are going with minimal kit otherwise, I would take my own pillow, sheets and duvet!

Thanks

We did take a duvet and pillows and it made the trip that little more fabulous! To reduce the space we are going to use vacuum bags the next time.

We have some Gelert pods which are oval shaped so you can move about. They are the usual sleeping bag nylon though which I can't stand so I'm looking for something similar in cotton. For France we always take duvet and best cotton sheets Grin

I have one like this trakkerproducts.co.uk/product.php?id=53&scid=17&sid=2

It's rectangular rather than mummy shaped, so warm and comfy plus you can unzip the one side if you want to cool down a bit. The inner is fleecy rather than nylon too and the 2 layers can be separated for warmer nights Smile

I have a large evelope style bag which has a cotton lining, in fact the whole thing is cotton.

Doesn't help with the feet sticking out - they should make sleeping bags with two-way zips so you can move both zips round and open whichever bit you like.

Down duvet+ compression bag = comfort and compact!

Definitely a duvet camper!! Mats/cardboard first, then air bed, then fluffy mattress protector, sheet, ME, then winter duvet and finally a throw/blanket.

If you've slept well at night I think you can cope with any weather during the day/night.

I love my duvet, sheets, feather topper and throw, puked high on an aerobed. It's so comfortable it's sumptuous (although sometimes just a little damp feeling right at the beginning)

MysteriousCircusZebra · 04/08/2014 21:02

One of these. Stupidly expensive and really comfortable. My dh got one off of ebay and I've stolen it. I don't ever intend to return it.

Calloh · 04/08/2014 21:34

In my previous post I meant piled high, not puked high - grim.

They look absolutely amazing Mysterious!

Down duvets and sucky bags here too. At Scoincamp I have to sleep in a sleeping bag but am working on cunning ways of secreting my duvet in unseen instead :o

NanooCov · 04/08/2014 23:09

DH and I have a double rectangle sleeping bag which works well. Zips down both sides if you want to stick a foot out the side. Think it's an outwell.

attheendoftheday · 05/08/2014 11:52

Duvets and vacuum bags here too - never going back to a sleeping bag!

attheendoftheday · 05/08/2014 11:54

Love the look of the duvalays, though!

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 05/08/2014 12:00

Duvets and vacuum bags here too. Suck them down at home with a hoover and then at the campsite using an electric airbed pump on suck rather than blow or using a handpump the same way (bit harder work though). You need to check before you go that you have an end which is the right size for the hole in the vacuum bag.

I hate 'mummy' bags too. We have Outwell double bags that are rectangular and really just feel like a duvet. Quite lightweight though so take an extra blanket if it's chilly. They're perfect for France and sunny summer nights but not if it takes a sudden cold turn. Loads of room and a brushed cotton interior.

VeganCow · 05/08/2014 13:35

Why not take a duvet and spread it on the back seat of the car for people to sit on, then it doesnt take up any boot space.

jennylambchop · 06/08/2014 16:12

I have an Outwell double, it has zips down the sides, so you can happily stick a foot out wherever you want-love it!

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 06/08/2014 16:56

We take a double sleeping bag (lovely brushed cotton inside) which I leave unzipped and a duvet which DP folds in half, then the open sides meet in the middle to allow for snuggling. This time of year it's plenty warm enough having them open down the sides. In spring we might throw an extra blanket over the join.
