Kitchen thingies and making toast....

We have a single burner camping stove (fair weather campers, only tend to use it for breakfast and BBQ the rest of the time) but I am a bit fed up of kneeling on the floor to use it. I know you can get swanky kitchens, but if I get something similar then it'll have to be cheap.... It will only be used to make brekkie or maybe to be used without the stove on to do food prep for BBQing without having to use up our table space.... Anyone got any ideas or alternatives?

If you do have a kitchen thing already, and a bell tent, what do you do? Leave it outside under awning/umbrella or bring it in at night?

Also, toast. I miss it like mad, I'm not a fan of cereal! I've seen weird toasting devices which you seem to stand the bread up on, how do they work (or more to the point, DO they work?).....?

Toast things: c

...complete waste of time!

Have a look on eBay or your local ads for a cheapie kitchen stand. I've managed to pick up a couple of 70s Hago stands for about a tenner each, they 're fab. & indestructible

ViviPru · 03/08/2014 07:07

The bread stands for toast are useless BUT the Bright Sparks toaster (just google it) gives brilliant results used on a gas burner. I swear by it. And it's cheap and small to pack.

Thank you both.... Off to research those options!

We have a grill on our double burner if you are going to upgrade your cooker but failing that what about a toasting fork for campfires? Or a cage grill that you'd use for burgers/chicken etc and hold that over the single burner?

bedhaven · 06/08/2014 01:22

You can just toast in a dry frying pan...we put our safari chef burner on a table to cook and put it under the table overnight. Last group trip our assorted cookers all stayed on table tops under the gazebo or awning- I've left our old cheapie single burner that comes in a case out in the rain with no probs too.

SweetPeaPods · 06/08/2014 02:34

If you have electric can't you just take a cheap normal toaster?
We also use our cooler stand for putting disposable BBQ on

SweetPeaPods · 06/08/2014 02:35

cooker not cooler

Aaargh! This place is a money pit. I googled Hago kitchen stands after reading SalomeD's post and have just bought one on Ebay. Couldn't resist its orange loveliness. Now my ultra-modern Campingaz cooker is going to look all wrong on it. Hey ho.

SalomeD · 07/08/2014 16:32

Well done Frozen! I'm still after the elusive additional bit which has a washing up bowl. One went for silly money on eBay a couple of weeks ago but looked brand new.

It looks lovely with Orla Kiely accessories too! as if any of us need an excuse to buy lovely things for our tents!!

My Hago setups are also the reason I'm dithering over which colour of Iceytek I'm going to buy (this is the second season of my pondering) - shall I go Tangerine so it matches the Hago or red to match the stuff in my tent?

I also can't decide which size

Eureka! I know - buy 2 x 25L rather that 1 x 40L: an orange one for the food to keep in the utility tent and a red one to keep the drinks cool in the tent!!

SalomeD · 07/08/2014 16:33
Hmm

Just read that last post - I sound like the sun has got to me Blush

ViviPru · 07/08/2014 16:41

OMG the tangerine of the Hago stand is the exact shade of my highlight tent accessories. I MUST HAVE IT....

onaroll · 07/08/2014 17:43

ViviPru - Hago kitchen stand in orange.

I have one 'brand new' in original box .

I also have ( and use ) a powder blue one; this matches all camp stuff. Both are kept between my tents.

I've put the Hago orange up for sale before with no takers....

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 07/08/2014 17:45

Oh no, ViviPru - another one hooked! By the way, it looks like mine may be missing the plate warmer rack thingie and also the white board for the cooker to sit on (so it is all orange metal). I can't say I care too much as it was the bright orange which sold it to me.

And SalomeD Grin, you don't sound like the sun has got to you - you sound like someone else who has spent a bit too much time on the MN camping boards....

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 07/08/2014 17:48

OMG, onaroll, there was a bidding war on the one I just bought (albeit a brief one). There is currently an orange one on an Ebay buy it now for 44.99. So, now might be a good time if you still want to sell it (quite tempted myself if it has all the bells and whistles must go lie down quietly with a bank statement somewhere to come to my senses....)

onaroll · 07/08/2014 17:51

Bell + Hago + Orla Keily, sadly doors not open as you would see how it
Matches the Orla Keily duvet cover.

Same bell with Home made Orla Keily bunting ( additional deco courtesy of mr onaroll) . Not my tent my friends. Only 'inside shots' have the owners in pic.....

Grin onaroll. Your DH has quite the artistic way about him, doesn't he?

Your bell is gorgeous though, as is that OK bunting. Gives me ideas, it does....

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 09/08/2014 12:52

What size is the bell tent?

I have a 3m and struggle with the tarp every time I pitch it. I can never remember how I did it the time before Blush

I have one similar to the Hago kitchen stand but it was brand new from a camping website...I think it was about £25.

makes the best camping toast ever
