Despite haunting this topic over several years and forming friendships with a number of lovely camping friends on the basis that I, too, camp, I'm a complete fraud and we're about to embark on our first PROPER family camp - as in, a full week, no going back. (Previously - since children - it's been odd nights here and there, back garden camping and a couple of festivals.) I am about to lose my Proper Camping cherry. Am also bricking it a bit.

We're heading somewhere there's forecast a fair amount of thunderstorms. Bell tent. 5 metre high metal pole, around which we sleep. I know if the thunder's very close you're meant to get everyone out and go and sit in the car, but how close do you let it get? And how do you then calm down the highly strung 6 yo and the 3 year old child with ASD, whom you've woken up in the middle of a scary storm?

Please tell me your reassuring thunder stories. Tales of burnt-out tents need not apply.

I have only found this thread this morning, knew I should have been on MN yesterday! Very relieved this morning that we have not flooded or anything after a massive thunderstorm here in the Black Forest overnight. Lay awake worriedly counting the seconds between the lightning and the thunder. When it got down to three seconds I did wonder if we should bolt to the car but it is parked a good 100m away down a hill and the DC were sound asleep. Fortunately then the storm slowly moved away but thinking about it now, we would have been struggling to do anything differently if the storm had moved closer. The rain was so loud that I couldn't hear anything else, not sure I would have heard screams for help. More rubbish weather forecast so thinking about moving on early.....

Hello pootling!

Hope you're having fun!

I am very worried about slubber and the chances of incineration on a campsite. I am glad she has the foresight to move to her faraday cage.

I know this thread is a bit old but am just back from yet another camping trip in a place in France that gets some pretty mega storms. The campsite itself is in a gorge but the lightning hits the peaks around and can be pretty impressive/scary. The moment we chose to dash to the car (and therefore wake and scare the DC was when we heard thunder and saw lightning at the same moment (was very very loud) and, I'm not kidding, felt the ground under our sims, tremble. That was it for me, didn't care how wet we got or who got woken up, at that point (it all happened very quickly), I was not hanging about in a tent. Turned out all fine and we found out the next day that the there was a lighting conductor on the village church right near where we were camping. Felt like too near a miss at the time though....

Wow beachcomber, that sounds scary, hope you are all ok and dry now. Are there more storms forecast?

Pootlingalong · 16/08/2014 16:49

Sorry just noticed you're home Smile

We had a scary experience on Guide camp a few weeks ago with thunder and lightening.

The storm moved through very quickly but there was one simultaneous flash and bang which was enormous and shook everyone right through Shock

The girls were very scared but coped really well and within a few minutes it had moved right away.

Not something I would like to repeat though!!

Last weekend we were in another storm which had no lightening but lots of thunder and it was definitely raining boulders for about 20 minutes which Dd3 found extremely scary!

I've camped in a couple of thunderstorms and usually just snuggle down with the kids and tell them everything is fine whilst praying that it passes quickly.

I have considered the Faraday Cage option although that is far from risk free too!

We got caught out this summer by two very close storms - there were a few seconds gap but then suddenly a v v v close strike. Made me slight less blasé about them! Both times the car has been parked a way away so I guess we would have been more exposed stood up and running!! Was exciting though...I love a good storm :)

We were caught in a storm a few weeks ago, it happened very suddenly at about 2am and the thunder and lightning were simultaneous. The car was too far away to get 5 sleeping children into safely. Thankfully They all slept through it while I was awake thinking we were all about to be struck, it passed over us in a few minutes but we could still hear and see it in the distance for about 2 hours. It was terrifying being out in it.

We were caught in a thunderstorm in France last year. Very terrified I was! The thunder was so loud that dh and I were shouting at each other and still could not be heard. We did think of retreating to the car but dd was very scared and I thought it might be worse if she could see the lightning rods.

Has nearly put me off camping actually as I still feel scared thinking about it.
