We are looking to have 2 weeks in Belgium - one week in the North (Flanders area to see Bruges, etc) and another week in the south (Ardennes area).

We have 3 young children and will be taking our own camping gear - can anyone recommend campsites please? TIA

Just going to find it - recommend Rochefort.

www.campingcard.co.uk/gb/en/europe/belgium/namur/campsite-les-roches-119902/

We stayed here twice - quieter than the big resorts but close to them, friendly, spotlessly clean. Close to play grounds, walks, cycle tracks and the town etc Outdoor pool across the road is free

La Roches web site has the option to have it in English if you need it. 15 mins away to where you can canoe the Lesse

Camping Memling is okay. It is very close to Bruges (walking as well as cycling distance), there is a supermarket a short walk away. Can't remember how the facilities were TBH, but I do remember that it was a lot better than the camping near Ghent were we also stayed.

DikTrom · 13/07/2014 21:33

The camping near Ghent is called Blaarmeersen. It is not close to the city centre, you will need to go by car or bus or cab. If there is a lot of rain then the camping is a swamp. If the weather is nice it may be okay, but when we were there there was a lot of rain and you had to wade through the water.

Mind you, not really what you were asking but we have just been to Texel (one of the Dutch Wadden isles). Was the first time. I would highly recommend it, especially with young children.

We also stayed in a fab Eco campsite in the north near sand dunes but I blowed if I can recall where it was!

Thanks for the recommendations - camping les roches looks nice and great that there is the pool to use too. Will investigate further!

I had looked at Memling for up north but thought maybe camping Groenpark may be a better bet? Sort if in between Bruges, Ghent, etc.

If anyone else has any other sites, that would be great, thank you!!

Id recommend camping memling for location visiting Bruges as you can just walk into the city. Yes, basic facilities but ok for a couple of nights.

Can't really help on Belgium yet - but we're thinking of a couple of days at De Lilse Bergen near Antwerp on our way back from the Netherlands.

To thread hijack slightly - Diktrom - can you tell me all about Texel - we'll be there in a fortnight. Staying on a small campsite in the middle of the island - Padang. Everywhere else booked solid.

We stayed on camping Rhoon.
Things to do:
Visit the lighthouse and climb to the top. On a clear day you will have a beautiful view. The beach near the lighthouse is not safe but there is a nice cafe virtually opposite the lighthouse.

public outdoor swimming pool Molenkoog is nice with slides. Calluna is also okay but all indoors, quite small and expensive.

Boat trip to see the seals up close and actually walk on a sandbank in the middle of the sea with TX20 Orion in port of Oudeschild (near the bridge, give yourself plenty of time to find the boat as it leaves exactly on time, also need to reserve a place on tel 06 51044235 (dutch mobile phone)

Walking in nature reserve near beach pole 9 (check with locals as they may move about) to see wild Exmoor ponies and wild Highland cattle.

Horse riding also for people who are complete beginners or walk next to pony with child at Manege Elzenhof or Manege Kikkert.

You can go to de Slufter nature reserve to see the tides at work with a horse drawn carriage.

You can have a tour Monday till Friday at the Texel brewery to see beer brewing in action and taste the many local beers (weekend also but just tour whilst brewery is not working). Kids get local apple juice.

Pick your own fruit at local fruit grower diagonally opposite the Brewery.

Visit Ecomare to see abandoned and injured seals and find out about nature on and around Texel.

There are a number of small museums check VVV Texel website (tourist information).

Go to the beach near de Koog. The jellyfish are safe, although I would personally not touch them. Lots of seashells, small crabs etc. Kids can go fishing in rock pools.

Parachute jumping and sightseeing flights at Texel airport. Also tandem jumps for kids. There are discount vouchers in local supermarkets (free) or ask VVV (gives 10 % discount).

We were amazed that there was so much to do at such a small island and really enjoyed it.

Thank you DikTrom - sounds great. Really looking forward to it - but never heard of anyone who's been!
