I've got one! It's only had two outings though. I made a massive vat of minestrone soup which was lovely and for breakfast the next day used the lid inverted as a skillet and cooked blueberry pancakes.

I fancy making pulled pork on my next trip...

Yes please to more recipes!

OnlyLovers · 12/07/2014 16:14

I thought a Dutch oven was an Urban Dictionary euphemism.

Dutch oven to the none addicted.

Round or oval heavy various sizes have lids with a LIP to hold hot coals on the top and feet at the bottom provide one pot meals that mean whenever I / we camp, we normally end up feeding everyone else in the tents around us at meal time too! Love mine I have 4 in total I think often cook at home with them too. You can cook with them pot side down for big meals or lid side down for other. Stack inside each other often and are the BEST piece of camping cookware I own. In fact but for coffee my stove gets zero use!

Here you go Dutch ovens have a look

Oooo.
They look good Smile

newnameforanewstart · 12/07/2014 17:03

Honestly the ThatBloody I would not be without mine, even at home BBQing you can turn out amazing things. For camping I don´t think they can be beat.

Not you do need to camp where either you are allowed pits, bbqs or open fires. Which I do so not a problem.

ThatBloodyWoman · 12/07/2014 17:07

May look into it as we're camping soon and have nothing to cook with yet.
It just looks so intriguing!

newnameforanewstart · 12/07/2014 17:14

Its a bit like a surprise every time you open the lid and the smell just hits you and everyone else!

We often camp for a particular hobby with like mined people we are all a friendly bunch and its now got a point were "friends" that we only met at these events turn up and hand me food or money and say we´re in when you cooking! We love it that way and it works for us but obviously you DON¨T have be like that. From my point, I never have to wash up and I always get the odd drink handed to me and we sit and chat for ages the kids (if there are any) all play together and we make smores and hot chocolate in a dutch oven last (sometimes with a little something extra added for the adults) thing before we turn in. In the morning I bung breakfast in and we ALL eat then go off and do our thing, throw another meal together and continue as before. Hence the reason I have 4 ovens but a family could easily get away with one or two if you want to make hot puddings and don't want to wash up inbetween

Recipe for pulled pork and mountain man breakfast pretty please! I'm salivating at that list....

I cook a similar variety of things in my Cobb but was hoping the Dutch oven would do the same stuff when we can have fires.

It's probably going to be a while before I can contribute new recipes but I'll keep you posted!

CampingClaire · 12/07/2014 20:31

Pulled Pork... i just stick either shoulder steaks or a piece of belly pork on top of a layer of sliced leeks and apples and a wee bit of cider/white wine/ apple juice (depending on what's open at the time!!) and lay the pork (well seasoned) on top. The seasoning can be chinese five spice or just lots of pepper depending on what i've remembered to bring!!
i make a sort of sub circle in the fire sort of an odd shaped split egg/embryo!! shape so that the dutch oven is surrounded by fire by not settled on something that may move if you get my drift, then build the fire around it and a few hot coals/sticks on top which are added to as they burn away obviously!! Add water/stock as the hours tick away but expect this to take 4/5 hours of adding stock/sipping coffee/tea/wine and then add a barbecue sauce of your liking about 45 mins before the end. Pull pork...add to wraps/baguettes/salad and enjoy!! 'simples' Smile

Mountain Man Breakfast

Ingredients:
•1/2 pound bacon
•1/2 pound sausage, ANYTHING you LIKE!
•1 medium onion, diced
•2 pounds of grated potatoes or
•1/2 pound cheddar cheese, grated again any type you like!
•1 dozen eggs

Preparation:

Pre-heat Dutch oven, 6-9 bottom coals and 12-15 top coals. Slice bacon, onion into small pieces, plus sort of bashed up sausages (eg, put sausages in DO, and pull them to pieces with any cooking implement you use, or squish them with hands etc) and brown in the bottom of the Dutch oven until onions are clear. Stir in the grated potatoes and cover. Remove cover and stir occasionally to brown potatoes (15-20 minutes). Beat the eggs in a separate container and pour the mixture over the hash browns. Cover and cook until eggs start to set (10-15 minutes). Sprinkle grated cheese over egg mixture, cover, and continue heating until eggs are completely set and cheese is melted. Slice and serve.

Pulled pork there are about 1001 recipes for!

I do a bbq version that is well received.

Ok, In advance or not make up the BBq sauce

cups cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/8 cup strong brewed coffee
1 tbsp molasses
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp hot sauce
2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tbsp red pepper flakes (less if you like it less spicy)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp each salt and pepper

By cup anything you have to hand basically you can use proper cup measures or any container! You might want to adjust the seasoning etc based on what you like!

1.Mix all ingredients together in a large pot. Whisk them to make sure that they are thoroughly combined. Bring to a boil, then reduce and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat, and enjoy or store for later!

Ingredients:

1 4-5 lb pork shoulder

1 1/2 lt apple cider vinegar

2 tbsp each; paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes

1 tbsp each, cayenne and chilli powder, dry mustard

2 tbsp olive oil

1 cup BBQ Sauce or 1 cup of the drippings from the pork

1 tsp liquid smoke if you have it if not then leave it out! I use This one

Directions:
In your dutch oven, combine olive oil and vinegar.
Mix your dry ingredients together. Rub all over your pork, and put the remaining seasoning in with the liquid.
Place pork in dutch oven, and cover with foil, then put the lid on.
Cook 4-6 hours or until the pork starts to pull apart.
Remove pork from dutch oven, and place on a big platter with enough room to pull it apart.
Drain the juices into a pan, and set aside.
Pull pork with two forks, and return to dutch oven.
9.Add one cup of the juices back to the pork, OR a good amount of the BBQ sauce or a bit of both and stir.
Enjoy on a bun, or just on a plate as it is!

I cook mine in the same way as CampingClaire as explained above!
