Lone camping, anybody done it?

Dd3 who has Asd is going to try Scout camp this year, which is great but they are going quite a long way from home and she may not cope with the whole week.

I am thinking of booking a site within an hours drive of where she is going so that if I have to rescue her I dont have to drive 6 hours in one day.

Anyway I have never been away on my own before and wondered if anyone had any tips or advice.

Thanks in advance Smile

Meant to say, I can pitch and strike my tent single handed and have slept alone in the tent when on Guide camp.

Actually I am quite excited and looking forward to at least some time just to do nothing Smile

I have been camping completely on my own and loved it. I went to one of the wilder type sites that allow fires, and took lots of treats. It was lovely sitting watching my fire late into the evening.

Since I was not catering for the masses I took easy food - those Look What We Found pouches, and the 'Gin in a Tin' type cocktails. And those little tubs of wasabi peas from M&S. And my comfy folding garden chair. Then sat eating my snacks and drinking my drink and reading in peace. , Though I guess you need to remain in a fit state to drive in case you get The Call.

During the day I went on long walks along the S Down Way.

Everything was pretty much the same as camping en famille or in a group, but simpler.

The only thing I would say is not to go to a site so far off grid that there is no mobile signal - in case your dd needs to call. For example, sites on the Northern edge of the N Norfolk coast, or in the Lakes, will probably have a weak of non existent signal. Check with the site owners that they get your network.

Thanks charm that is really good thinking actually about the phone signal! I wouldnt have thought about that Blush

And food, I was thinking about that, I have cooked for 30 on an open fire and/or 4 gas rings but never for 1 LOL Grin

I love having a fire and will look for a site that allows them.

I also took my sandwich maker like this because with one or two people it's OK, and a toasted cheese sandwich makes a great breakfast. Doing them one by one would take too long with loads of people. I cooked over my fire, too - a burger one night, and then chlli from the pouch another.

Oh, god it was bliss!

Ineedmorepatience · 06/07/2014 17:50

Wow!! That sandwich maker is cool!

I was thinking if I have hook up I could take a toaster and toasty bags, but that would be even better Smile

Going to have a look at the pouch meals to.

Ooo am quite excited now Grin

I've been too - to spain. Was a bit scared at first but rapidly forgot about that. A glass of wine helped ;)

Go for it: am sure you will be fine.

I have no friends so I camp on my own.

Well, no friends I can camp with anyway. The hardest part is finding ways to entertain myself. If I can get a signal I can always whip out my dongle and have the whole of the internet at my disposal. Books are good too. I spend most of the day sightseeing a well.
Does get a bit lonely after a week of no friend-like conversations.

And I eat too many 'pour on hot water' type meals.

Ineedmorepatience · 06/07/2014 19:28

That was brave headache Smile

I am teetotal so wine wont be on the menu and also as charm said I need my wits about me in case I do have to rescue Dd3.

Am becoming more confident by the minute Smile

This page has loads of toastie makers and other things you can use on your campfire. I have never tried my sandwich maker on a fire, just on my gas stove, because of the shorter handle.

Ineedmorepatience · 07/07/2014 19:41

Thanks charm Actually the campsite I have found which is less than an hour from the scout camp and in a lovely spot doesnt allow fires which is a shame but I can live with it. Because two other camps I have booked do Smile

They also have no hook ups left which is not a problem so long as they will charge my phone/phones for me so I can be available!

I am going to get one of the toasty makers you linked for me yesterday and providing they come back to me with a positive response about phone charging I will be booking Smile

Thanks tiggy I will defo take some books with me Smile
