SIMS and sleeping bags

HexBramble · 23/06/2014 14:35

I have 2 10cm SIMS (bliss!) and last year we took sleeping bags. It was ok but I found the bags too prone to slipping off the SIMS and I fancy a little more comfort this year.

Does anyone cover their SIMS with a fitted sheet or anything? Would this work? I'm also thinking of taking old duvets with us instead of bags - We are camping on Il de Re in France this year.

Any experience of duvets instead of bags?

I don't know if it works with SIMs but I always cover my airbed with a fitted sheet, otherwise the bloody sleeping bags slide everywhere. And it's not like sheets take up a lot of packing space.

hillbilly · 23/06/2014 16:46

In the uk I put a blanket underneath and in France I don't use sleeping bags so have under sheet and cotton sheet and duvet.

TheFantasticMrsFox · 23/06/2014 18:40

Always take duvets unless at Scout camp where I would be mocked mercilessly
We use vacuum bags, Hoover to remove air at home then electric pump/ sucker that plugs into the car for coming home. I honestly cannot see why people use sleeping bags when such luxury exists so easily :o

Pootlingalong · 23/06/2014 20:12

I have made cotton covers for the SIMs for when we go to France etc. Helps keep them clean and I find them cooler to sleep on and they look pretty. I bought two cheapo single duvet sets from ikea and used one to make two sleeves for the DC's mats. DH and I have a single SIM each but the duvet cover holds them together IYSWIM. Fleecy versions for UK camping too!

Do you have sleeping bags with nylon, slippery, outer covers? We have cotton inside and out and they are lovely and snug - better than a duvet. Ours are a few years old but something like this:

Fourarmsv2 · 23/06/2014 21:33

We use a fitted sheet with a valance to tuck under and hold it in place :)

CharmQuark · 23/06/2014 22:44

My sleeping bag ha a cotton outer, and I do usually put a cotton sheet on my SIM as I don't like the feeling of the nylon cover. No problems with slipping off.

HexBramble · 23/06/2014 22:47

Thanks everyone!

For those using fitted sheets - are they on SIMS? How do you keep them fastened down? My SIMS, even though it's a 10cm, isn't weighted enough to keep sheets down.

I'm rather excited to take duvets now. Luxury!

10cm SIMs here too, and I tried a sheet but it kept slipping off and going all wrinkly. That's why I made the SIM covers, they don't budge Wink

HexBramble · 23/06/2014 23:15

Pootling - don't suppose you fancy making 2 double SIMS covers?

Hmm, tempting, but you don't need to make the double onesGrin We have two alpkit dozers and they fit nicely together into an ikea single duvet cover, simples

yellowdinosauragain · 24/06/2014 11:17

I've got a similar set up to pootling although I wasn't intelligent enough to make from duvet covers. I've made pockets to slot over the sims from sheets.

HexBramble · 24/06/2014 12:57

Pootling - I'm confused!
I have 2 doubles, but DD and I sleep on one, and DH and DD2 sleep on the other, so they are actually used as doubles.

So do you fold yours in half, hence fitting them into single duvet covers?

Yellow - did you sew triangular bits onto each corner then?

I wonder - shall I buy 2 cheap duvet covers and just slide them onto the sims? Am I overthinking this?!

My dsis made a slip cover for my son's sim, it's a long thin 'envelope' sewn like a long pillowcase for the mat, with poppers along the top edge

Pootlingalong · 24/06/2014 19:22

Yes Hex, I was the same as you, trying to get my head round it! We have two dozers measuring 60x 195cm but use them together as a double bed, I guess a double SIM is a similar size? Standard UK single duvet covers fit 135x 200cm but Ikea ones are a bit bigger i.e. 150x 200 cm. You could always try popping it in a single duvet cover you already own, that could work Smile

HexBramble · 24/06/2014 21:20

Pootling - aha! So, a single cover may actually provide me with that snugger fit? I shall try it! I have IKEA single duvets here.

You are the voice of reason Grin

yellowdinosauragain · 24/06/2014 23:18

Not sure what you'd want triangular bits on the corner for?

I just made long pockets out of the sheet to fit snuggly. I didn't bother with poppers on the end. I just fold the 40 odd cm that overlap the end under the mat. They're pretty snug so they don't shift anyway.

But I'd do what pootling suggests if I was doing it again!

HexBramble · 25/06/2014 05:41

Yellow - such is my level of sewing skills absolutely rubbish

I may be able to manage the pockets you describe though Grin

OP posts:
HexBramble · 25/06/2014 05:42

Yellow - do you just do top and tail pockets? Or side ones too?

although the side ones will be dangerous territory for me

yellowdinosauragain · 25/06/2014 06:31

I'm even more confused now! What I did was cut a double flat sheet in half, then fold each bit in half length ways and sew it together on 2 sides so I was left with a long tube that was open on one narrow end. I think it was a double sheet anyway but I checked the measurement first.

Feed the sim into it, fold open end under sim, voila!

SalomeD · 25/06/2014 08:05

Lidl's stretchy jersey fitted sheets work a treat on a double SIM - also handy for making a double out of two singles

UniS · 25/06/2014 08:08

I use a flat sheet overvmy SIM. Don't tuck it in or anything.

Pootlingalong · 25/06/2014 08:19

Yes I made my single cotton covers in the same way as yellow but just cut up a duvet cover instead. If my camping gear wasn't all packed up I would post a picture of their loveliness. Used cheap fleece blankets to do the warmer ones for camping here in the UK. How did you get on with your experiment Hex?
