Lotus Grill / Cadac Safari Chef / Cobb - help me please

I have wasted hours researching and I just can't decide. Can anyone help me please? We have a campervan so need something that doesn't take up too much space. The van has 2 gas burners so can cook pasta and boil water inside but want something more versatile to use outside.

Other things to think about;
Has to be able to grill sausages / burgers etc
Would like to be able to cook pizzas
Quite fancy the idea of wrapping stuff up in foil and cooking somehow

Thanks so much

We've got a Cadac Safari so I can tell you about that but have no experience of the other 2 for comparison sorry!

We've also got a camper with 2 rings and the Cadac has made such a difference to what we can cook. I do pizzas on it straight on the BBQ rack with the lid on (I've learnt to turn the heat right down otherwise the bottom burns before the top has cooked), I've done casserole type bakes using a small roaster (although at the end of last summer I bought a proper Cadac roaster to try out this year), plus the usual sausages/burgers on the griddle. This year we've also bought the attachment that means we can use the small gas canisters for on the beach or if the big bottle empties. I love ours, we use it in the garden too Smile

Cadac are easy and versatile. I have the tall one (cardi chef?) and cooked for 9 people every night for week, with a 2 ring burner in the caravan for doing spuds, rice, pasta etc.

Sorry to hijack thread, but I've got a safari chef too, but have never used it for anything other than a bbq, do you have any other tips Amandinepoulain how long do you cook a pizza for? This would please my children no end!

For pizza turn it right down and let it warm up for a while so that the heat distribution is fairly even. I've only ever tried thin pizzas or premade bases with our own toppings, and make sure they are small enough to fit in it! They take around the same time as they would in a normal oven. The main thing to watch out for is a burnt bottom Grin

Another favourite is meatball bake - a packet of meatballs and 2 tins of tomatoes in a small roasting dish (or the Cadac one) for about 20 mins with the lid on, then tear up mozzarella cheese and ciabatta and put on top, and heat until the cheese has melted. It's yummy!

Hmm. Had more or less decided on the Cobb last night, but now considering the Safari Chef again! Think I have ruled out the Lotus Grill because it is basically a quick bbq. Can't do much else with it.

The main thing that put me off the Safari Chef is having to carry yet another gas bottle. And that it is the same kind of thing as our gas burners.

I've got 2 days to make a final decision, thanks for your thoughts.

I've recently got a Cobb, just been practising with it in the back garden before we go camping end of May. I have made a full roast chicken, bratwursts (from aldi) and tonight I'm trying ribs!

I also have a wok for it to make chilli, fajitas, stir fry etc.

You can also make bread. I've got some of those packets where you just add water and need - bake in an enamal dish or foil cartons like from a takeaway. Imagine the smell of fresh baked bread wafting across a campsite!

I got mine becasue we already have a Coleman (petrol) stove and wanted to do more than BBQ with a BBQ and didn't want to cart gas around.

Ahem. That's knead. Silly phone.

Cobb Cobb Cobb!

Pizza.
Freshly baked scones and tea on the beach.
Full roast dinner.
Any bbq food you like.
An overwhelming variety of stir fries, risottos and paella.
Beer bread.
Everything you can cook at home and more.

Yum

I think Cobb it is. I was worried about the length of time it took to heat up but then read it was a lot less with the Cobblestones. Time to get the credit card out..

Love, love my lotus grill. It's really amazing and quick and economic with the coal. !

yellowdinosauragain · 15/05/2014 18:35

I'm sure the lotus grill is a fantastic bbq.in fact purely as a bbq it probably kicks the cobb's arse. But that is all it does. It doesn't have the versatility of the Cobb. Hence the Cobb wins hands down.

Good decision!
