I need a "thing" to cook under- what the hell is it called?!

We have a Vango Diablo 400, about 9 years old now but not heavily used and still ideal for the three of us and two dogs. Tent porn could easily convinced me to upgrade but truthfully there is no need and a new tent of similar spec would be £££££.
So we are planning a grand voyage round France next year and need some form of extra shelter, initially to cook under and eat in the shade but also to sit out in of an evening. Previously we used a £15 Wilkinsons gazebo but really need something more sturdy as bits of it are probably still blowing round the foot of Mount Snowdon
I have seen awnings for newer Vango models but am unsure if they will fit and they are the wrong colour Is there a generic sort of shelter I could buy, not necessarily to attach to the tent but to stand alongside if needs be. Also what are they called? A festival tent seems to have too many sides to cook safely, as does a kitchen tent.
This will be a big holiday for us so we need it to be perfect, ideally without shelling out for an Airbeam a new tent :)

Probably not what you want but I think Aldi are selling gazebos for about £60 this week. Might be sturdier than the £15 one at Wilko.

ShoeWhore · 07/05/2014 23:04

I was going to say is the word you're thinking of tarpaulin but I think you want something a bit more substantial from what you've said?

This

TheFantasticMrsFox · 08/05/2014 02:48

I looked at those permanently but they seem too enclosed to cook and sit out under. I am imagining a sort of arc shaped "thing" but I think they might be specific to a certain model of tent

I think they are called Event Shelter?

TheFantasticMrsFox · 08/05/2014 07:36

Yes, thank you forgettable :)
Further research shows that (barring Vango having one stashed in a cupboard somewhere) the rather natty add on canopies are not available for my tent
The event shelter was what I had seen, a step up from a gazebo and with plenty of space to dangle fairy lights and bunting for eating and cooking- hoorah! :o

Thumbs up!

Forgettable · 08/05/2014 07:50

Not Paul McCartney style though

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 08/05/2014 07:55

You could buy an event shelter, and tent fabric, spray waterproofing and paint on seam sealer. Then make your own panel to join the event shelter to your tent, and treat it. Custom made extension.

Decathlon have a well priced event shelter thing....

Nobloomingideapgornot · 08/05/2014 12:11

The Coleman event shelter is brilliant, you can use it with or without sides so very versatile, we cook under it in foul weather and sit under it at night.
We add fairy lights and bunting for that extra glamping look!

I got one from asda last year for £30. Wouldn't stand up to massive winds but actually did well for what it cost and wrapped up very small.

The mesh sides were really handy for keeping some of the wasps out Blush

Mum4Fergus · 10/05/2014 12:11

Can't do linkies but google the Ozark Trail shelter...mesh and can open all 4 sides. Got it in Asda few years ago...

MissWimpyDimple · 10/05/2014 13:02

Yes that's the one I have. Ozark Trail.

I have an outwell sliding canopy, you can pull down the sides to give shade or prevent the draft. It's good but the kids sometimes fall over the floor straps. Think I paid about £50 not the price on eBay so worth shopping around.
