What to take on DofE

DD is going on a DofE practise walk this weekend, just 1 day walking. In September she will be camping for 1 night and walking for 2 days.
Firstly what will she need to wear for the practise walk? Was thinking leggings or sports shorts but not quite sure. Will timberland boots be okay?
Also can anyone reccomend a self inflating mattress, needs to be light and fold up fairly small. And anything else that she will need such as backpack etc
I'm not very outdoorsy as you can probably tell just trying to work out what we need in advance.
Thanks

Were you not given a check list by the school ? Both my dds have done many many DofE expeditions. They didn't take blow up mattress just a thin foam mat to put under sleeping bag. Important stuff:
Walking socks with thin pair of socks underneath, good worn in walking boots, first aid kit, light weight trekking trousers( the kind with zip off lower legs are great when it gets hot) waterproofs (just in case even if forecast is good), torch with spare batteries, they usually have to take cooking stuff too and matches.

Will they have access to showers/toilets at camp site? If not toilet roll is a good idea!

Oh and strong insect repellent especially at this time of year!

Has she got proper walking boots and a decent waterproof? She might want waterproof trousers too if the forecast is wet.

It's a good idea to pack everything in plastic bags and then put them in your rucksack - it helps keeps things dry if it's very wet and much quicker to unpack/repack too.

DD1 experienced at D of E now! Smile Most important items are;

Waterproofs that can fold up easily
Walking boots already broken in
Thick walking socks
A base layer top to go under tee shirts and fleeces, wicks away sweat but keeps wearer warm
A good sturdy rucksack , that has been adjusted to fit them as they will have to carry heavy equipment/tents even at Bronze level. Line the rucksack with a waterproof lining, a thick industrial bin liner will do
warm, layers
Lots of sugary snacks ie. dried fruit, cereal bars , jelly babies etc to keep energy levels up
Blister plasters just in case!

They should be provided with a kit list by the organisers but I think there is a suggested one on the D of E website.

Good Luck
