Hi, we are camping newbies, and have spent a fortune on camping stuff gulp.

I am ready to buy a stove- it needs to be efficient, travel well (we are driving to france) and cook for 2 adults and 2 small children.

What would you recommend? Thanks!

www.amazon.co.uk/Campingaz-c69487-Camping-Chef-Stove/dp/B0014BSDXUThis is probably the most commonly used camping stove - prepare to gulp a little more, though, because you have to buy the stove, a regulator and then pay a deposit on a gas bottle. These ones round off quite a chunky gas bottle, which once you have got one, you keep taking and exchanging for re-fills. Camping Gaz gas is widely available in France. I have never quite figured how to work out the correct combination of regulator, stove and gas bottle - but you mus have a butane regulator to use butane gas.

Another option is this type which run off aerosol style canisters, very easy to buy in campsite shops etc. IMO they do not burn as fiercely as the Camping Gaz stove, so it takes longer to boil your kettle, but they do involve less faff, perhaps. You could take two if you will need to use two pans at the same time. They use up canisters quite fast so you always need one in hand.

We've got the second kind there, but will upgrade this year to a double burner on a bottle. I agree the cannisters are very handy to change though. I will miss the ease of use of a single burner cannister stove.

We were giving a few stoves a good inspection at the outdoor shop the other day there. We haven't decided yet.
One thing i do know, is that camping equipment is shooting up in price!

I was most interested in this one.
Or maybe this?

That one with legs looks v impressive - and expensive!

I get a bit irritated with our two burner stove, getting it all packed into the metal casing and in the box, and fancied upgrading to one like your first one, Pictish, that just folds up. But I made the man in Blacks demonstrate it's easy fold up mechanism...it jammed, got stuck and was just as much of a pain. I don't think it was the same model, but if you do get one like that, make sure it is actually easy to fold up.

We are looking at stoves and seen the same campinggaz stoves. Attracted to them partly as they claim to use a lot less gas than previous models and also like the fact that they fold up easily as two young children. Struggling to find any reviews on them though. Also wonder whether we would be better getting something more basic to start with and work up. I need to have confidence in it to do food for two young children so needs to be reliable and easy to use.

They are all reliable and easy to use.

Also, concentrate on v easy food. Pasta and sauce in a jar, for example! And the weather will be hot, presumably, and the whole point of France is baguette, cheeses and pate Grin

I am tempted to take another look if they use less gas and the model you looked at is easy to fold!

Thanks all.....dannyboyle you pretty much took words out if my mouth. If we go for a canister one I feel.as if well have to buy loads of them and prob won't cook well....

You see I've done lots of pasta and sauce from a jar. We cook on the open fire a lot too. I want to be a bit more varied an ambitious with the camp cookery now though. I am compiling a comprehensive camp kitchen which my dh is about to build for me to fill. We just need to choose a stove.

DillydollyRIP · 07/05/2014 10:13

We've got the campingaz 400st. We only got it this year so have only used it for one camping trip. No problems so far, lovely and sturdy.

While on camping, your ability to cook that your favorite spicy meal is a moment not to mention for the unadulterated satisfaction of it 😆 😆 😆 .

We use a Twin burner Petrol powered Coleman its quicker than gas, a lot hotter and will work in any weather

They are not cheap new, but we paid £20 used for ours, look at You tube videos on how to light very easy once you have had a go

fuzzyduck1 · 24/11/2020 11:16

If your going to France make sure you have enough gas if your going for Calor they are not compatible with the bottles in France so you will end up buying a new bottle and a new regular that will be useless in the uk as you can’t get them filled here.
The little single burner one mentioned above is probably best they are cheap and the gas cans are available everywhere
