What to sleep on?

I've always used foam mats as I'm a lightweight kind of walking camper but after a decade of not really camping because Dh whinges he's told me we're going camping this year as we can't afford a holiday.
I'm not sure we can afford his kind of camping either.

What to sleep on?
Mats won't cut it with him.
Criteria is cheap as possible but comfy as possible for a whingeing pathetic would prefer a five star hotel kind of man.
I suspect the children and I will stick to foam mats otherwise with six of us we might as well have a weekend in a hotel though we would like something a bit more luxurious. We will have a car but with six of us and a dog space is still limited. If it can be small and lightweight in case I decide I'm going off without them one weekend then all the better.

Help please. The world of camping has changed somewhat in the years I've been out of it

The self-inflating mattresses are a definite step up from mats and take about the same amount of car boot space.

They seem to vary from about £15 to £100
Is there much difference in standard

I'm feeling rather overwhelmed with everything that's needed for camping with a family on a site

After getting fed up with airbeds deflating in the night, we're now much happier on self-inflating mattresses. You need to store them flat, and once they've had time to self-inflate you need to blow them up a little bit more. The cheaper ones are variable; we've had a multimat one for about 5 years with no probs, but also a Eurohike one with a broken inflation valve after 6 months. The more expensive ones from Outwell or thermarest last years and years.

Have just re-read your OP... six humans, one dog, one car - where on earth are you going to put everything!

Our local Asda has those self inflating mats on sale in their seasonal section at the moment, I dont know if you have one nearby but it might be worth a look. Me and DH use one when we go camping and they are surprisingly very comfortable

We have a roof box though I am the queen of packing. We did a week in Devon then onto France for a week and we didn't use the roof box. Lists and stacking crates are the key. Grin

I'm going to run the self inflating ones past dh and see whether he thinks price or quality is most worth it. I think perhaps go cheap in case he refuses to ever go again and if he loves it we can upgrade later. Will get him it look in asda.
Thank you

I posted yesterday about a self inflating mattress on amazon. The single 10cm thick one is under £30... I still haven't decided whether to risk it as most others are £50+
