Hi, we currently have a little one ring, gas canister hob thing. Perfectly useable but we were looking to get something new - what do you recommend? Family of 5.

Not sure what to start looking at, so thought I would see what everyone likesSmileSmile. Thanks!

We've got a two burner thing with a grill from CampingGaz. Its about 8 years old now and never had a problem with it. It's probably too old to find now but would imagine an updated version would only be better. We're a family of 4 and it's coped with all our cooking needs.
Happy shopping!

We have a single ring and the largest one of this and we are a family of 4.

ShoeWhore · 01/05/2014 12:16

Another family of 5 here. We have a 3 ring gas stove with legs. (and flip down toast attachment no less Grin ) Had it donkeys years and it's still going strong.

I really find it easier that it's off the ground. I don't think you especially need a third burner but it does make it easier to get bigger pans on.

we have a petrol Coleman, twin burner and very powerful. really useful not being dependent on finding gas canisters especially in France and when we're away from civilisation.

A two-burner CampingGaz stove, the one with the grill. Mainly used for boiling a kettle for coffee (it does boil faster then the little single ring 'briefcase' stove) first thing in the morning, cooking a mammoth fry up for 5 adults and 7 children on a Sunday morning. Apart form that we use a campfire grill (like hillbilly) and / or a BBQ.

Often I can't be bothered to take the two burner stove and it's gas bottle and just take the single ring stove and canister.

2 burner stove with grill for longer trips.
Suitcase stove for shorter.
Take elec kettle & halogen oven too if EHU.

Campingaz camping chef - we got it from Go Outdoors although I notice they have brought out a Hi-Gear version this one here

A big canister of Calor gas is good for a week at least.

A Trangia. Sometimes + disposable BBQ, and once with camp fire cooking. Family of 4.

What don't I have would be a shorter answer..

A camping gas double burner with grill, although the grill is pretty shite. Don't use it much apart from to boil water or cook pasta /rice really.

A single burner that attaches directly onto the gas cylinder I use for the double burner if space is at a premium and I want a backup while intending to cook mostly on a fire.

A Cobb. Fab fab fab bit of kit. Use ours to make all the usual stuff plus roasts, pizza, cake, scones and bread. Love it. You'd struggle to use just this for a family of 5 but in conjunction with the single burner you already have it would be great.

A landmann tripod for cooking over the camp fire

A Dutch oven although this hasn't had is first outing yet

A Kelly kettle which I can use on the Cobb or stand alone for boiling water.

I also have a cadac safari chef but didn't get on with it at all plus the fact it needed to use the same gas cylinder as the first 2 meant it was an either /or bit of kit rather than complimentary like the Cobb. But I know there are people on here who rave about them. Mines getting sold when I get round to it....

Wow yellow you are seriously kitted out in the cooking department - what size car do you have? Envy

yellowdinosauragain · 02/05/2014 18:27

Hillbilly I don't take everything everytime I go camping. I tend to go to more wild camping type places when is just me and the boys when I'll take the tripod Dutch oven and Kelly kettle. I used to take the single burner as I was worried I might not manage on a fire but getting better at it! The Cobb and double burner come on family camps with the tripod and a firepit if the campsite allows.

I love cooking outside, it's a big part of what I love about camping, hence prioritising cooking stuff over other things. We have a Nissan almera tino and a Mahoosive roof box. And might be needing a trailer as the boys get bigger and we won't be able to pack stuff into their foot Wells!

Now I want one of these....
