Can you recommend a tent?

We need to buy a tent!

We are not a camping family tbh. But we do need a tent.

It needs to sleep 4 adult sized people in two bedrooms - 2 adults (me and DH) and then 12y DD and her friend.

As we are going with a friend of DD's I think it would be better to have the bedrooms apart from one another ideally. We would also like some space to sit and put stuff, and ideally stand up in.

The first priority is for a weekend in August as we are booked to go to Carfest.

The most camping we will ever do is the very odd night once or twice a year.

We did have a pop up tent but had to throw it away as it has started t thin - DH said he could see daylight in places last time he and DD slept in it, and it was getting old - and too small for us anyway.

I have no idea where to start really - no idea how much to budget either!

Any advice? TIA

Yes I can.
Firstly, don't buy one of those really cheap no name tents from Argos, it usually ends in disaster - though you'd have great stories to tell.
Do you want a groundsheet already attached? I always do. Though it is a personal preference, I hate things crawling over me - I had a nasty scare with an ear wig when I was 10.
How do you want the bedrooms arranged?
Do you want a living area inside or out?
Do you want an outside area for shoes etc?
Buy one with a HH - hydrostatic head, basically how waterproof it is, the higher the number, the better it will stand up to the rain. I was told buy one with a HH over 1200 and it should withstand UK summer rain.

We have a Gelert tunnel tent it's supposed to sleep 4 and it really does! Some tents berth ratings are obviously meant for members of the Pygmy tribe.

Is a newer version of our tent.

This tent looks better though, more windows and a good HH

Though I'd probably pay the extra £50 and get this tent if I were buying now.

Have a look around the net, you'll find something you like the look of. If you can before you buy, have a wander round a camping store that has tents up so you can get a feel of what you'd like. Some stores have last years models they want to get rid of, so you can get them cheaper.
Like anything though, shop around.
Good luck!

For bedrooms separate to each other look up the Outwell Hartford XL (I want one!).

We like Outwell tents!

Totally agree with Hairylegs! Avoid cheap and cheerful bundles as they're cheap for a reason!
Check out the Outwell Nevada. They do a large 3 bedroom option where one room is at one end of the tent and the other two are side by side. We have the medium one which we use as out one-night stop over tent and it's faband really quick to pitch. They have extensions which you can get later to add more space if you decide it's for you!
We started with the Hartford when the kids were small but it's not the easiest thing to put up without an argument so quickly changed it for a Michigan (much easier to put up), we then got a Maryland which is our main family tent for this country.
They have sewn in groundsheets which help keep the bugs out and also its an immediate build. You don't want one where your build the inner and then throw the waterproof outer over afterwards…for obvious reasons!!
Enjoy and I bet you get hooked!!

We've got the medium Outwell Nevada too. I took it, with the porch extension, to Carfest two years ago. DS and I can put it up in about 20 minutes. I also have the big windbreak. It's a great setup for a family; we've had some fab holidays in it.

Shockers · 30/04/2014 09:25

Sorry... we don't, we have the Nevada in large!

Hulababy · 03/05/2014 19:21

Thanks all. I will look through the recommendations.

We will want attached groundsheet. I hate bugs and esp spiders.

And as taking dd's friends - def ape bedrooms and probably more tunnel type so away from each other.

This looks a fantastic deal, and Vango are an excellent brand.

Two BIG sleeping compartments so the girls can stash all their stuff, big central area....looks easy to put up. Bargain!

TheFantasticMrsFox · 05/05/2014 19:00

TBH if you won't be using it often there are some fantastic deals secondhand on eBay.
We have a Vango Diablo which we bought from new and which has seen sporadic use (we camp a bit, we get trench foot, we don't camp for a while, the memory fades, we camp again and the cycle continues) Our tent is fantastic, has never leaked or collapsed in any way and can be picked up on eBay for £30 or so, often barely used.
A good tent is pricey so look for the best offers you can get :)
