Uk Campsite recommendations

I was hoping to prevail to the wisdom of Mumsnet.

We're going camping in mid-May for our second time ever as a family with a 3 year old and a 1 year old. DH and I are seasoned campers but much more used to really roughing it. We've been really shocked at how cold family tents are compared to our mountain tents and I'm a bit worried about temperatures at night in May for the little ones. They both have three season sleeping bags, but of course staying in them is another matter!

So, could anyone recommend a campsite that's within three hours of Staffordshire that has stuff to do nearby? DH says Abersoch has a microclimate and will be OK but I'm still not convinced. We would normally just go to the Lakes.

Or do we need to use a hook up and get some kind of heater? brought up to believe that stoves and heat have no place in tents.

We are near to Staffs and went here at the beginning of April and were all fine. The DC had fleece blankets underneath them and dd (6.5) had a fleecy onesie. The facilities were immaculate, Barmouth has its own microclimate and miles of sandy beaches.

Lots to do nearby, Harlech Castle, panorama Walk, cycle the Mawddach Estruary, there cycle hire at Birmingham Garage in Barmouth or at Dolgellau Cycles. Can recommend T H Roberts Coffee Shop in Dolgellau too.

We've also stayed here and that was lovely too Smile

Have you tried asking for recommendations on MN Staffordshire & MN North Staffordshire too?

How long are you planning on going for?

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 28/04/2014 20:03

Thanks for those, Julie. They look just the thing we're after. We're only going for two or three nights - our eldest is an escape artist and last time we had to one on one him for every minute he was awake. This time I'm planning a windbreak playpen jail

I hadn't thought of the Staffordshire pages because we'd be leaving Staffs IYSWIM, I'll have to have a look!

If you have an escape artist I would try Dafarn Rhos. One of the things we particularly liked was the fact that the DC couldn't get of the site. Being right next to the beach and coastal path helped too Smile

If you are NT members Pas Newydd is a nice trip out.

Loads of lovely sites in Derbyshire - Knotlow Farm is basic but great - useful family bathroom! Also try Upper Booth Farm in Edale.

When our kids were smaller we used to put them in thermals, then onesies, then gro-bags then sleeping bags. We'd also put a picnic blanket under the sleeping mats as they'd often wake up cold having rolled onto the floor.

Good luck!

Thanks again Julie. That's really helpful.

Kath - you're right Derbyshire's great, it's just that I grew up there and Edale is nearly home! You've reminded me of all of my DoE trips now...

Think I might have a look at your recommendations Kath. You wouldn't happen to know any near to Dovedale would you? I love it there Smile
