Anyone got Walkie Talkies?

Just back from a lovely couple of days with the kids wandering off all over the place which was great, but a bit scary when they went on their 'adventures' for longer than expected.

I just wondered if anyone has ever used walkie talkies, and if so which would you recommend?

Funny, we were thinking the same thing- couple of people had them last time we went and we are considering getting some. Be interested in the replies too, thanks

At what age do you let your kids wander? We do loads of camping but I'm always nervous about dds going out of my sight. I'm always amazed at how many tiny tots are walking around on campsites without adult supervision.
Love the walkie talkie idea.

I let the 6.5 and 5.5 year old go to the park if we are really close, buta lso really useful I think ofr when Dh is with 1 and I am with others and we can't find each other at a theme park.

(By close I mean if I can get there in under 90 seconds AND theya re with older kids LOL- secretly paranoid)

well mine are 7 and 4.6 - dd at 7 is generally ok to wander off and make friends, ds,well, not really - he is so vulnerable and open to all sorts of nastiness. But, attempt to let dd go off without him and we have an alighty epic scene - so I just thought a walkie talkie may be an option (for dd to keep us informed as to where they were etc)
Not that they go miles away... (er well they would if they could tbqh)

PIL just back from caravaning in france they use walkytalkies, and get really good range with them, handy when hubby sent off to top up parking meter and the ladies carryon shopping, bil took one when he went out fishing in the dingy to keep in contact with the shore. Handy for driving too as they are in 3 cars.

Just back from the unicycle world championships. a friend was there with a 7 or 8 y/o , both had a walkie talkie, it was V usefull, kid could wonder and make friends and play about with them as could dad, each could check up on teh others whereabouts.

Will def be looking at that system once our lad is old enough to potter about at events with light supervison.

we use walkie talkies - for camping, trips to theme parks, days out, festivals. Couldn't have coped without them in Disney and then only the adults were using them!

Our children DD7 DS6 have always seen us using them and know how they work. We have small lightweight ones which we strap to them to stop them been stolen. Both know they are not toys to show off with to new found friends and use them sensibly. Perhaps we have scared the s* out of them about the nasty man or woman because they ask for them before they gallop off to play/explore.

This is the first year we have let them out of our sight whilst camping and along with dire warnings about never ever go into anyone elses tent / leave the site / go anywhere with a stranger, even a 'new friends' parent, the walkie talkies have helped us relax a little rather than sneak around watching them from a distance!

  • we have ICom ones.

We bought Motorola walkie Talkies for a Disney trip in 2000. Meant that we could split up & keep in touch re queues etc.

Since DS was 8 we have let him cycle around campsites with a Walkie Talkie attached to his belt. At that age he had to show his face back every 15-20 mins, but meant he could explore. Now (11 next week) he can go for longer but has to radio in every 20 mins or so.

Fab things, definately recommend.

Sleepymumof3 · 14/08/2006 22:20

We use walkie talkies a lot but must admit we never really let our girls wander off until last year ( then 10 and 13)

Katymac · 14/08/2006 22:27

What a fab idea - do they do 4 handset ones or just 2

We are going away with DD & BF next week and this could make my life so easy

We bought walkie talkies recently (Marthamoos recommendation). We got them from Tesco 1/2 price (9.97) and they have a 3km range! They are really easy to use are quite small. I saw them in there still recently ...so might be worth a looksy.
They have been a godsend...with the kids and also for us on daytrips, themeparks etc.
Ds is 9 and can go off around the campsite with it in his pocket or hooked on his trousers. That is about the most freedom he has ever had tbh.
