Five people in a four man tent?

Yay or nay?

Some points:
It's a Lichfield Creek 4, so huge living space for bags.
But no sewn-in groundsheet, so we couldn't sleep in there, I don't think, due to draft.
Going in November so the more bodies we can pack in, the warmer we'll be.
All women, not overly tall or big.

Will we fit? No chance to try it out beforehand!

Camping in November?

Are you quite mad. Grin

Greenandcabbagelooking · 14/08/2013 17:14

We are a bunch of Guiders/Scouters, so probably!

I wouldn't.

You're looking at a small 4 man there: it's only got 60cm/person as it is.
If you limit yourselves to less that 50cm/person then if anyone bends their knee in the night someone else gets pushed against the side. You'll be drowning in condensation in the morning.

Snorbs · 14/08/2013 17:22

I've usually found tent sizes to be on the optimistic side as it is. I don't think you'll be able to squeeze an extra adult in without it being uncomfortably cramped.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 14/08/2013 17:22

Ah. Knees in the back might be a problem.

Sleeping in the porch, which is probably half as big again, won't work, will it?

How long for? Sounds like a bit of a squash but if it's only for a night or two...?

blueemerald · 14/08/2013 17:25

My friends/work and I camp reasonably often (all adults) and our rule for tents is always stated capacity minus one....

grendel · 14/08/2013 17:29

The quoted capacity of tents is always a bit optimistic. If it says it sleeps 4 it generally means 4 of you packed in shoulder to shoulder like sardines. It really means, it can sleep 4 of you at a push, but will be comfortable for 3. I think it very unlikely that 5 of you would get any sleep in a 4 man tent.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 14/08/2013 17:30

Two nights.

Mostly looks like a "no" then. I did think we might be a bit squashed!

I took 3 teens away with me last week and they all slept on 1 double airbed quite comfortably.
Tbf only one of them is the size of an adult.

I would suggest putting enough sims on the floor of the bedroom to cover it and then go for it, at least you will be warm.

Good luck Smile

overmydeadbody · 14/08/2013 17:35

I would only do this with family, no way with people I work with. Yuk. Too much encrouchment on personal space.

welshgirlwannabe · 14/08/2013 19:24

We tried to cram one extra person (a small child) into a 3 man tent last summer and wound up bailing on the whole idea and booking into a hotel! As mentioned higher up, condensation is your biggest enemy here. Knees/shoulder pressing against the vinyl causes big problems! Maybe bring a small pup tent for the extra body?

professorpoopsnagle · 14/08/2013 19:44

We have but 3 of them were under 6!

Could you rig up an inner from another tent in the living room area? You could always put it down in the day if you need the space. It would need to be one that goes up inner first, or maybe take some rope/bungees with you.

Pixel · 14/08/2013 20:11

Don't do it!

I did, for one night only, share a two-man tent with my two dcs. They were only small so I thought it would be ok but it was still cosy and not much sleeping went on. I wouldn't do it with adults.

Pixel · 14/08/2013 20:18

How about a pop-up tent in the living space overnight to eliminate the draught problem?

WeAreSeven · 14/08/2013 23:26

Agree with Pixel. If you all club in, you'd get a Quechua pop up quite cheap, Pop it up at night, wrestle it down in the morning!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 15/08/2013 07:01

Pop up a good plan, I bet someone already owns one.
