Camp food in france for a fussy child

I'm not sure if this should be in a camping thread or elsewhere.

DD (5) is getting more and more difficult to cook for - she used to be great and eat anything, but now its just bland food . The trouble is that she is also dairy intolerant, so that limits a lot of things.

We are off to France camping and I need some ideas for a dairy free fussy child. We can't afford to keep spending a fortune in supermarkets and will bring a fair bit with us, but this won't last long in the heat (I'm hoping for that Grin

Does anyone have any recipe ideas, bearing in mind that we'll need to find french equivalent of foods here - i.e. bacon seems to smoked and she hates that, sausages are much spicier and she hates that too etc etc.

After a difficult trip last year, I'm at a loss of what to feed her! We of course, will have a fab foodie time and she will sit there picking at her plate looking miserable.

Can't have dairy so - no yummy baguettes filled with local cheeses

Hates spicy food or anything smoked
loves ham, chicken, tuna and sausages

Hates veg such as onion, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, courgettes, salad
eats broccoli, carrots, potatoes, asparagus, peas and sweetcorn

Hates sauces or anything with 'bits' in it.

Please help!

The more you pander, the fussier she will get.
You know that don't you?
Put it out-her choice to eat or not but she will not starve.

Pâte baguettes?

Yonihadtoask · 11/08/2013 15:27

Umm my DSS (16) is quite fussy also.
However when we go away, as there are so many of us I can't be bothered catering for anyone's individual likes so I tend to just serve up, and if anyone doesn't like it, then they can leave it.

We were in France until yesterday so have shopped a bit.

The sausages are not all spicy. We had some which were very like English in taste, just longer and thinner.

How about ready roasted chicken?

Would she eat pate? Smooth pates can be surprisingly easy to eat for DC.

Corn on the cob.

My fussy one would eat quite a lot if stuff on the basis that it was the French version, and much much yummier. Worth a try?

Crepes might be your saviour (especially if you eat out at all). The packs from supermarkets aren't quite as nice as fresh, but you can put just about anything on them.

Wow thanks for the replies. Yes I know about pandering to her - except I don't and she does just starve. She is already off the weight chart Sad but most of that is dairy related.

She was such a good toddler and loved all spicy food and then one day just stopped eating. She gets a lot of stomach aches and I wonder if that just puts her off sometimes.

Can you believe she has even gone off ketchup and doesn't like chips!

I just find it so depressing - its easier at home and she can just eat the bland food she likes, but in the heat nothing keeps long. I'm hoping that we can hire a fridge this year.

Ready roasted chicken would be great - I hadn't noticed them before - are they in supermarkets like here?

I'm hopeful then that we will find sausages that she like - going to look for long think ones then!

No she doesn't like pate, but loves corn on the cob.

Would love to give her crepes but they usually have dairy in them.

She does try everything I give her to be fair

I am not a massive fan of ham in the uk but love jambon blanc that you get from supermarkets in France - I could eat it all day.

Dd suggested thin steak. We have ours with mushrooms and red wine, but the kids just have plain.

Does she like fruit? Big grapes are nice and filling.

meditrina · 11/08/2013 16:06

Oops Blush brain in neutral when thinking about crepes.

Perhaps try a patisserie for lots of different types/textures of bread, and see if she likes olivade/tapenade on it?

ananikifo · 11/08/2013 16:15

You can get plain meat, including sliced ham, in France. You can also get the vegetables you've said she likes, and bread. If you go to one of their large supermarkets I bet you'll find a lot of the things she eats.

The ham is lovely here.
Tuna pasta? Savoury rice (easy and light to pack). Make sure to pack your corn on the cob fork-thingies.
Boiled spuds in their skins with ham.

Easy enough to whip up when youre eating differently.
