I see that there's a wide range of prices and thicknesses.

Can anyone recommend a decent one for us please, or else I fear that DP will be miserable and never let us camp again.

Willing to invest in something if it makes camping happier for us all.

I was hoping I could get one in Aldi or Lidl, but I seem to have missed any camping deals for this year.

This will be the first time we've camped since pre-children (9 years ago now!) and I really want it to be good fun and not an endurance trial.

Costco online have some very decent cheapo ones and they are back in stock again. You pay 5% more if you aren't a member, but that isn't much on £25.

I have yet to use mine for camping, but if you want to go the other extreme, Exped MegaMat's are 10cm of sublime sublimity :P Cost two arms and a leg, but my god. DH and I played Princess and the Pea by putting things under the mat (first playmobile and then graduating to computer cords) and lying on it and seeing if you could feel the lumps or not. DH got ejected from the game when he complained of feeling his wallet which was in his pocket.

I have an Alpkit Dozer, which is lovely and comfortable, but I just wish they would make them a bit wider

YellowDinosaur · 31/07/2013 22:46

I have an Aldi one and its fab. Never tried any others so nothing to compare it to but i'm not sure I'd want it thinner than 5 cm... Its comfy as it is but much thinner and i'm not sure...

VivaLeBeaver · 31/07/2013 22:48

Exped synmat.

troutsprout · 01/08/2013 00:18

Dh and I have alpkit ones which I thought were unbeatable ... But last year we bought ds (16) a A 300, Self-inflatable mat QUECHUA from Decathlon. It was about 30 quid
I had a slipped disc and tried it one night and I found it as good if not slightly better.

I love my Thermarest - it's been brilliant for years.

LowLevelWhinging · 01/08/2013 09:22

Brilliant, thank you! I'll have a look at all these later.

I'll also second the Costco mats - except ours are well used for camping. I'm really fussy and easily get a bad back, but these are great. I also have a lidl one and an aldi one and they are fine for children, but my bones couldn't cope with them!

LowLevelWhinging · 01/08/2013 12:40

should we get a double for me and DP, or just two singles?

OP posts:
troutsprout · 01/08/2013 14:05

singles

LowLevelWhinging · 01/08/2013 17:00

what's the reason for that trout?

I love my thermarest, but couldn't justify cost now - was bought when I was young and single! Saying that, the most comfy way is two mats on top of each other Grin so maybe two cheaper ones?!

troutsprout · 02/08/2013 08:53

I reckon a double is smaller than 2 singles. Also better nights sleep if you can feel the other person moving around so much
Also... I am territorial and like my own space

troutsprout · 02/08/2013 08:54

Duh
can't feel

Lucky13 · 02/08/2013 10:56

Two singles take up my king size fitted sheet. With two singles you have more options if you need to move the beds round for any reason. Also the fitted sheet keeps them together, so you feel like it's just one double.

Rooners · 02/08/2013 10:58

We have two from Sports Direct (Campri) and one from the Range.

they are all terribly uncomfortable.

We went HOME to get the inflatable mattress the other night after spending one sleepless night on the mats. Then hadto blow it up mainly by mouth as our 12v in the car didn't work.

It was worth every second. BLISS.

LowLevelWhinging · 02/08/2013 13:27

Right, I've ordered the Quechua ones for the DCs and 2 thermarests for us Smile

Thermarests justified as they can be used as emergency guest beds too I hope...

thank you all so much for your help!
