Camping with 18mo?

My DH and I really would like to get away for a holiday this year with our 18mo DS, I am a teacher so it has to be in the summer holidays, probably August.

Everything is so expensive that we have thought about going camping, friends have a massive tent with separate bedroom areas we can borrow, we have plenty of other stuff from previous camping trips when we didn't have children.

My only question is: would you go camping with an 18mo? He sleeps pretty well at night, doesn't wake horrendously early and loves being outdoors. But what would he sleep in? I was thinking to take his travel cot, pyjamas, 2.5tog sleeping bag and fleecy blankets. Good idea or not?

Anyone who has been camping with children this young I'd love to know what you did. I'd prefer him to sleep in a cot if possible as I don't co-sleep.

We've just been with our 14 month old.
He slept in a travel cot with just a sleep suit and blanket on him in our pod bit of the tent. This was fine for him as it was warm.
He slept really well all night, and went down well too!

We were away in May with friends who brought their 8 week old baby. It was cold at night but he was fine. We started with our DD when she was 6/7 months old.

What you suggest sounds ideal. We used to put ours in vest, babygro, and fleece all in one like this: www.campingworld.co.uk/Models.aspx?ModelID=5980&gclid=CLiHzJnHn7gCFTMdtAodmQ8AWw&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=UnitedKingdom.

She would sleep in her travel cot (we had a Littlelife Arc 2 but our friends take the normal style travel cot which works fine) with an IKEA sheepskin on top of the mattress for insulation. She slept like a log.

It is a brilliant age to introduce them to camping - they love it and get freedom to roam outdoors which you just can't give them anywhere else. Just take lots and lots of changes of clothes and don't forget to pack wellies/waterproofs/sunscreen/sunhat and, given the weather at the moment, a paddling pool or large trug to fill with water so he can cool off.
