Forestry Comission campsite Beddgelert

Just thought that I would write a quick review of the place that we went to over whitsun.

The campsite is beuatiful, and situated in a forest just outside the village of Beddgelert. The site and the surrounding area are both stunningly beautiful.

The facilities on site are good. There are 5 showers in the ladies block, 8 loos and 6 washing cubicles. This is in the main block, there are another two on site. Showers are always hot and free. There is a disables tolet/shower but wheelchair users would not be able to easily get into the pot washing room.......a good excuse to get someone else to do the dishes perhaps!

There are several pot washing sinks, all undercover. there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need them, as well as sinks for washing clothes.

There is a meeting room and a small shop on site that sells the basics and a reception that has information on the surrounding area.

There is a small adventure playground....if your kids are young and go to bed early resist the remptation to itch near this as older kids do play there later in the night. the site is not that noisy but the sound of kids having fun might make your's reluctant to go to sleep.

Key to my kids fun was the presence of a small stram to one side of the site. this simply made their holiday and they could splash around, but might be a safety issue if you had small kids. the stream is beuatiful, fill of bluebells this time of the year.

This is not a party camp site, very much a quiet haven, with lots of wildlife and plants. there are brambles which might be a worry if you have toddlers.

Only down side was the midges, who feasted on me! Nothing put the little buggers off.

I would recomend this for a quiet break for people with children aged 5-10. Good facilities in a stunning location.

That sounds fab, I really want to get into camping now my youngest has hit 2, but hated the thought of a clubhousey type campsite.

:)

MamaG · 03/06/2006 19:29

OH and I think I need to change my glasses as I thought your thread title ended in badger alert Blush

TheThreeFillyjonks · 03/06/2006 19:30

beddgelert is beautiful too. what did you get up to?

robinpud · 03/06/2006 19:34

We have just got back too MB. Did you go cycling in the forest? Did you have the cake of the day in the coffee shop at Rhydd Dhu..yummy yummy.
Are your legs a violent shade of bright red becuase you didn't realise quite how hot it was yesterday. Why was I wearing cropped trousers?

Seriously though it is a gorgeous camp site.

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 19:35

day one on the little train to BF to see the llechwedd slate mines
Day two to Harlech Castle, the beach and a 'posh tea' on the lawn in Portmeirion!
Day three, walk around Beddgelert, smashing pizza at a place recomended by MD, with a nice long walk down the river, stopping to paddle and skim stones.
Day three and drive around Snowdon....looked at the price of the trip to the top (£70 for the 4 of us! Shock ) and then decided to walk to the local slate mining meseum (free) which was fanstastic. Trip to Caenarfon for a mooch about and an explore of the Roman fort.

Superb holiday, the kids loved it, and so did we.

did you stay there robinpud???

Fimbo · 03/06/2006 19:36

My friend has just spent the week at their site in Yorkshire (Keldy/Kelder something like that!) she loves it and goes every year. The opposite of Haven/Butlins etc.

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 19:38

We do go to sites with a pool etc in France, and we enjoy those too, but this was stunning. The kids had a chance to run around and get wet and muddy and be kids. Do all the things I used to do when I was a kid, playing in a very similar stream on the mountain in s wales where I grew up.

They rand off energy and I read my bood, drank wine and toasted the campers of MN!

No Blush we stayed at wonderful cottage just outside Porthmadog as I am not huge camper much to dh's disappointment. But I have camped there in the past and we did go to book dh in for a boys weekend soon.
We go every may and the weather this time has been fab. We got the train on thursday but got off at a stop with an unpronounceable name and then walked back to Tan Y blwch to pick up the return train through meadows filled with bluebells.. heavenly.
Did you like the ice cream shop in Bedgellert?

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 19:49

Oh yes!

And the pub opposite. By the end of the walk we were all hot and bothered, so ice creams for the kids, and a lager for me were camping essentials!

It was just the perfect holiday. With the exception of the midges, and my trapping my thunb in the camp bed, and needing a hole drilled in the nail to relieve the pressure! The nurse in Porthamadog was very kind and very gentle.

Penrhyndaedraeth was it?

I can even say it....much to the kids astonishment Grin

Sounds idyllic

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 19:58

with the exception of the midges! Which are vicious. I look as if I have a mild case of small pox atm! Shock I have 9 bites on my face alone.

OP posts:
roisin · 03/06/2006 20:00

Did you find anything that worked? Or helped when you got bitten?

Dh apparently tastes horrid to midges, so he has no sympathy with the rest of us who get eaten alive Sad

We're going to Mull in August, and I'm a bit worried about the midges. (We're in a cottage though, not camping.)

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 20:04

I am the best midge magnet in the world and they feast on me and leave the rest.

Anything with deet is better than the rest, but nothing deterred these little buggers.

Best thing to take is piriton (for me at anyrate) the topical stuff doesn't do much for me. But I do react a lot and can end up with a hand sized wheal for each bite!

OP posts:
LucyCampCat · 03/06/2006 20:15

You must taste reaallly good mb!

So it's a coastal site then next year? Grin

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 20:21

Inland S Wales next...so I'll get done again, and then the Vendee....but the wind there keeps the little buggers at bay!

OP posts:
roisin · 03/06/2006 20:31

How many holidays are you having this year MB?! Wink

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 20:41

5 if you count the one to mil at oct! but all are camping, and i'll spend less on the 5 than we used to when we used to book a caravan in france.

what is the point of being a lazy teacher unless you go away on all those holidays we get!

the s wales trip is going to cost me 66 quid!

OP posts:
roisin · 03/06/2006 21:07

Grin I love the holidays.
I'm not looking forward to Monday at all! But I've just got 5 wks, then going to Germany with school trip, then when I get back we have just two days tutor interviews ... then finished Smile

Can't wait!

robinpud · 03/06/2006 21:14

Our school is closing a week early so only 6 weeks which is 12 days cos I only work 2 days a week!!! sorry to gloat Roisin.Grin

Blandmum · 03/06/2006 21:18

7 teaching weeks for me, but i teach a lot of y11s and sixthforms, so once the exams start i'll have an easier time of it. i'll get taken for cover, but at least there is no planning or marking.

Campsite sounds lovely MB, we love N Wales, but have only ever hired cottages in the past. We took the plunge a couple of weeks ago, and bought an Outwell Hartford XXL for a bargain price. First outing with it should be in a couple of weekends' time, having tried camping the first BH in May in a friend's tent. We can't wait!
