'Smores - is it me?

I downloaded a US camp cooking book recently and found a recipe for 'smores. I thought they would be fab round the fire this weekend. As I have no idea what a Graham Cracker is, I peered closely at the black and white print-out of the book, and thought they looked a bit like square digestives, so that is what I used. I sandwiched marshmallows and Dairy Milk between two digestives, wrapped it all in foil and put them in the embers round the edge of the fire.

The digestives burnt to a bitter black crisp and the rest stayed pretty much uncooked - does anyone know what I was doing wrong? (In the end we left them in the fire until the digestives were completely black and ate the by then melted chocolate/marshmallow centres - yummy.)

We were at a campsite a few weeks ago where the site manager had been in America for a number of years. He did smores with chocolate covered malted milks. Probably for the shape but DC said they were delicious (we usually use chocolate digestives). The key is to make sure the marshmallow is gooey IMO and not to put more than one in.

Yes to the microwave. Digestives + marshmallows + chocolate buttons + 30 sec blast = yummy

Hmmm chicaguapa. That might explain my problem partly. Perhaps 3 marshmallows and 4 squares of dairy milk may have been overkill

Chocolate Hob Nobs is the way to go. Oh yes.

We always do s'mores with Cadbury (or sometimes Green and Black's). Hershey's is nasty. Yes, they have a stupid name but people are very sentimental about them here as they are linked to childhood memories of summer camp. Happy Days .

I would also argue that the name 'S'more' is no sillier than your 'moreish' .

I bought a very kitsch US campfire cookery book recently in TKMaxx (never seem to be able to leave there without buying a cookery book).

There's a recipe in it for Graham Crackers!

I'm with iaintdunnuffick - choc hob nobs all the way! Just stick a melted marshmallow between 2 and jobs a good un!

I also do banana and chocolate like shiraz and chic orange cake - cut top off an orange, hollow out and full with choc cake mix (I cheat and use packet one), replace top, wrap in foil and cook in camp fire. Yum.

Oooh YellowDinosaur - chic orange cake. I forgot that - we did it on a camp recently, although with a plain cake mix rather than chocolate. They were yummy but for 11 people, we ended up with so much orange scooped out it seemed like a shocking waste (we ate as much as we could, but that is a hell of a lot of orange).

We are off sgain this weekend - chocolate hob nob smores it is!
