Best portable firepit

Recommendations please - I was looking at the Oxbox on hz's site yellowfieldscamping.co.uk/2013/01/22/portable-fire-pits/ which looks good. Needs to be as flat pack as poss as my kit is getting worryingly big!

Sometimes you can have a fire anywhere, or in designated spots so as not to have masses of burnt areas. Some specify fires only off the ground and generally they will hire out firepits or you can take your own.

thanks hillbilly - fires in designated spots was what I had imagined but all this talk of firepits is just too tempting

There are a few campsites that allow campfires off the ground but inexplicably don't hire out fire pits so it's always worth double checking. Burnabake and Porth Joke are two examples of this.

Sorry MPFT but in case anyone is looking for a bargain, the Dunelm Mill fire pit is reduced to £12.49! Sadly not available in my local stores

We just camped at a lovely little site that used old washing machine drums. Best firepits ever - just stand on a triangle of 3 breeze blocks. No scorch marks on grass.

I've told dh he's to get me an old scrap washing machine for my birthday...

wow JFAC. That is great value. Ours was great when we took it to Chilled in a Field festival recently. I would snap that up!

I have an old metal dustbin lid that I wedge up on bricks, stones or blocks. Does a great job and almost flat.

MPFT you are making me more jealous! I tried to persuade DH to get one back when you first mentioned it but he was annoyingly right in saying that we didn't have room for it in the car. We ended up with a notebook BBQ for camping so i thought that with the fire pit at that price I could justify it to have it at home. The DIY ideas sound great though, and more up DHs street!

Bringing back this thread from last year as I never did get around to getting a firepit due to lack of space. However we do have a bigger car so hopefully I can squeeze one it. Currently looking at this from hz's site.

Any other recommendations from all you knowledgeable campers out there? Needs to fold flat (ish) and hold enough wood for a decent fire.

They both look identical to the one we got last year from Dunelm Mill which we used again at Easter and it was brilliant. Kept a small group of us lovely and warm on quite a cold weekend (you wouldn't want too big a group round it though - there is a limit to how far away you can be from it and still feel the heat. In terms of packing it is a similar size to the top part of a Cadac, but lighter.

Given this weekend's forecast, I've just ordered this fire bowl. Thanks MPFT, saved me doing hours of research

I was in The Range today and they had one similar to the ASDA one.

We use fake logs for the flames and put coals in for the heat. You need something to stare at but the logs don't give off much heat.

Does the Dunelm one pack away into a bag? We've been using our frontier stove for camping and the fire pit for the garden as the one we have is ancient and doesn't have a bag. Too grimy for the car.
