Suitable Second Hand Tow Car for Caravan

crazymum53 · 09/06/2013 14:24

We are looking to buy a 4 berth caravan and also a suitable tow car.
Any recommendations for suitable used cars (not estate cars) please.
I have looked at the Caravan club site but their recommendations are for new cars. Any ideas about where to find information on used cars welcome.

Depends on Budget
Less than 2K
Good Volvos V70 plenty about for less than £1000 abour 22mpg around town 28 on a run and Land Rover Discoverys good ones under 2K Diesels do 26 around town 30 on a run, remember Discoverys were built as a tow car and are very robust, handy on a muddy field too.
Why not estates?? I would never have anything else.
Old Volvos are Bomb proof can be insured on Classic insurance so cheap if its occasional use.
I have a Peugeot 406 diesel 1.9 estate its a 7 seater diesel paid £700 about 4 years ago, it pulls the caravan no problem, very reliable and still gets 35MPG around town even though its done 200,000 miles.
The Serento can be found cheap but when we needed a bigger seven seater as the Peugeot boot seats are only for kids I looked at the serento but heard too many tales of woe, I bought a Mazda Bongo its appaling on fuel at 22MPG around town but very compact for parking and seats 8 adults in comfort and as we only use it for holidays and best its on classic insurance so the economys not a problem.
My mates selling a mint Volvo V70 estate, its full service history full leather seven seats etc he will be lucky to get £1000 as no one wants big cars, so my point is if its occasional use then some bargains about

Thanks for the advice so far. DH is leaning towards a land-rover discovery. The vehicle would be for towing / holidays rather than everyday use but I was wondering if this was an expensive option.
We do not have off street parking and that is the main reason against an estate car.
Are volvos really bomb proof - my mum managed to write-off a volvo! What's classic insurance and does this help to reduce running costs?

Older Discoverys use the 300TDi Diesel engine , they have a few minor issues but as long as the vehicles not rusty, check the boot floor! they go forever.

Look at the forum introduce your selves and ask away in the Discovery section
Modern Volvos crumple a bit more in an accident than the older ones so its easier to write one off as more damage can be done but the main thing is older Volvos are worth very little.
Insurance
Classic insurance is mainly on cars of 15 years or older, many Cos offer it, heres one I have used

Ring up tell the you are thinking of buying an old Volvo or Discovery just for holidays towing the caravan on a limited mileage policy and they will give you an idea of cost and what year vehicle would be cheaper to insure.
Some time its better to have off road parking, look for an old person who as no car but has a drive and rent it for a few quid a week or cut the grass in exchange etc as being on a private drive will help.
Estate cars are so much better for a family, usually cheaper than an MPV, massive boot space for tip runs, bikes to the park etc, I had a Volvo 240 we put a single bed in the boot and could shut the door it was massive!
