We are going camping next weekend (after just returning from Salou last night!) and I am online looking at sleeping bags for my wee boy. Are the 'baby' ones actually for small babies? We will be in the Highlands of Scotland, gulp, so I am expecting it to be cold at night regardless of how sunny it may, or may not be! Also in the process of buying a new tent, will a one room 5 berth standing height one fit two adults and travel cot? Any tips appreciated! X

wine. and poss whisky as in the highlands. we have a folding camper now but the best tent we had was our polycotton one. i just love canvas or polycotton for temp control. snug in winter and cool in summer. with babies i have always found they sleep better if you can replicate home as much as poss e.g grobag if they are used to it, take mobile/nightlight/blankie/mobile/whatever. and while indoors overheating is always a worry when camping they get cold easily so lots and lots of layers. have fun!

Yes I would think a 5 man tent would be big enough.

If you find a tent you like on the internet you should be able to find the dimensions of the bedroom and living area. Single airbeds are around 75cms each and a double will be around 140cms so you should easily fit a travel cot in.

Mind you the baby might be warmer next to you on a double airbed.

If you do go for the travel cot put a couple of folded blankets underneath the baby, every layer underneath is worth 2 on top.

The baby sleeping bags fit most babies upto around 18mnths I think.

Hope you have funSmile

Hi, we've just been away this weekend with our 7/12 old. Lots of fun during the day but night time wasn't great! We had him on his own self inflating mat between us in a vango nitestar mini and wearing lots of layers. First night wasn't too bad but last night was cooler and I just don't think he was warm enough, would only sleep cuddled right up to me but not happy with the bag zipped up (he tends to sleep with his arms out if he's on his back). We'd do it again but need to rethink the sleeping arrangements. I'm thinking maybe a double self inflating mat with him between us would be warmer. People of other fora are suggesting putting him in the sleeping bag with you though this wouldn't work for us as mine isn't big enough. I'm trying to figure out if a wider or double sleeping bag could work but not sure if it'd keep him sufficiently covered without going over his head.
We're determined to crack it anyway!

We have just taken our 9 month old on her first camping trip in scotland this weekend. We were in a small 3 man tent. We had roll mats and 2 duvets underneath us all and baby was in vest, socks, babygrow, cardigan, sleeping bag (the one she uses at home normally) and a couple of blankets on top. She was cosy all night Grin. We were lucky to have dry warm weather but it was cold at night and she probably slept better than she does at home.

We camped last night in Shropshire. Ds (19mo, so a little older than yours) was happy in vest, socks, baby grow and 2 tog sleeping bag in his little life tent. DH on the other hard was cold, fully dressed on an air bed under a 13tog duvet.

I think when we camped last summer Ds wore pretty much the same but we took a cot duvet with us too to chuck over him if it got too chilly. Can't remember if we used it - one night he ended up on our air bed under the duvet snuggled up to me.

Have fun!
