Off camping in a few weeks, have booked family friendly small quiet sites. We're likely to be doing day trips and therefore won't be spending a huge amount of time on site, we'll probably return after dinner.

Here are things I Don't Know About...

Do we need a lock for the tent?
What's the etiquette of tent pitching eg do you face the door away from other tents, or is that considered anti-social?
We have a tent, a sleeping bag for DD and a camping light, but that's it, what would you recommend for sleeping on? DD is 3.
Any other essential equipment? Can't face the hassle of cooking/washing up so we'll probably eat fruit/bread etc for breakfast.
Any tips for an easy life? Thinking crocs for walking to and from toilets to minimise wet trainers, any thoughts like that from experienced campers greatly appreciated!
All suggestions to up the comfort factor particularly welcome!

take sleeping bag as well as duvet as sometimes a duvet is not as warm as a bag. I also take hot water bottles as warming up the beds makes a lot of difference. I take a bucket/potty so kids don't need to tramp across the site to the loo in the night as well. Lock all valuables in the glove box of your car!! Do you have a torch that can be hung from the top of the tent? It's not essential but makes life easier.
I also take dressing gowns that you are happy to walk around in as I have been to sites which have a pool but no changing room/shower so you need to walk back up to your shower block afterwards.
Carrier bags for rubbish/dirty washing/wet clothes and woolly hats for night time.

Try the 3 season gelert sleeping pod if you don't like being restricted at night.

I'm definitely taking a hot water bottle this year to warm the bed before we get in. I borrowed my friend's last year and it was lovely!

You're all scaring me with these stories of being cold! Every time I've been camping I've woken in a boiling tent with a dehydration headache!

Love the look of that big sleeping bag.
