Camping in France

We have for the past few years been camping in Cornwall in the same site which is very small, very kid friendly and we love it. I am torn between wanting our kids to go back year after year to the same place and wanting something a bit different and, dare I say it with a bit better weather. I have often thought about going to Northern France - we live in Kent so good for ferries/tunnel - but initial searches on Google only give huge sites with pools, entertainment, lots of (im)mobile homes etc. We are after the same sort of thing as we have in Cornwall - i.e just tents - would cope with a few caravans. Does anyone have any great recommendations? or good places or look for some. Thanks

have a look at Ukcampsite.co.uk It is a great website and they have lots of reviews of campsites in the UK and on the continent, all independent, views of 'real' campers IYSWIM

If you post and ask for recomendadtions people are very helpful

We are going \link{http://www.domainelaforet.com/\here}. It is in the Vendee and the weather tends to be good, but isn't guarenteed. Smallish site, two nice small pools, great playground, low key entertaiments. Went two years aho and had a fantastic time, back this year in our own tent

ooh ooh, I've been looking for a thread to post \link{http://www.theloirevalley.com/content/default.asp\this site on} - if you fancy going down as far as the Loire (6 hours from the tunnel - I checked!)then it gets fantastic reviews!

I've already decided we're going there next year, we've not been on this years holiday yet, but there is no harm in planning ahead BlushGrin

Slight hijack here - I'm thinking the kids might be old enough to do this sort of holiday next year...

How far south would we have to go to guarantee fairly decent weather in the school summer holidays? (Don't fancy camping in the rain!) Don't want it too hot though as we all have fair skin.

No Guarantees, but the Vendee has it's own micrclimate, and next step down is the Charente Maritime which is beautiful. Both of these are easily done in a day from Cherbourg / Caen.

However, we are going all he way to Perpignon this yr (on the Med) so taking an overnight stop.

My manager has been going to this campsite in the Vendee for the last 7 years \link{http://www.matthewsfrance.co.uk/stjean/st_jean.htm}. He has 2 DD and they love it!!!

katyp · 05/04/2006 16:34

Thanks guys! Sounds like the Vendee is the place to look at!

Blandmum · 05/04/2006 16:39

It is a great place to go with kids, beaches are beautiful and gently shelving, lots of extra things to do with the kids. If you google for Angela Bird's guide to the vendee you will find a great website with masses of things to do

Try Brittany if you want more character - if you like cornwall you'll love Brittany! We satyed in lovely campsite - camping Mane Guernehue in Baden on the Gulf of Morbihan - really quite and perfect with a fantastic pool complex but no laid on entertainment - 3 fishing lakes, some goats and donkeys and ducks! Village is lovely and within walkign distance. It does have mobiles, chalets etc and kids clbs in peak season but we wnt end of August and it was so peaceful and quiet. We all loved it and will go back

Blandmum · 05/04/2006 18:28

Brittany is, as you said full of character. However I am swayed by the vendee since the weather tends to be a bit nicer and although jam packed with tourists there are less Brits than I found in Brittany

sunandmoon · 05/04/2006 19:43

I am from the Vendee... and that's why my manager decided to try it 7 years ago and this is where they now spend 3 weeks each summer. It is a long drive down but it is all worth itSmile

calpopscalum · 06/04/2006 18:00

Ooh, I love the Vendee too - going back there this June! Just keep alternating between the Vendee and Brittany! Have to say though that we found more Brits in the Vendee!!! Even thiking about perhaps venturing to Port Bourgenay next year so even further south!

Can't wait till hols in June!
Emma, realised that as you are in Kent, perhaps you were looking for a campsite more towards Eastern/central France as it's a bit of a drive from Calais to the Vendee/Brittany. can't help you on campsites but if you do do the drive, I know of a very good hotel in Rouen if you want to break up your journey!
