Would it be terribly foolish to plan to camp next half-term (October)?

Will we freeze to death?
We have some friends who have never camped (and want to but not on their own first time Hmm) and we've been promising to take them but what with busy schedules and all have never got round to it. We were going to go for a couple of nights next week but other events have got out of hand and we have now cancelled. Softened the blow by telling them we can go at half-term before I looked up dates and realised it isn't until the end of October...
Could this be great fun or will we put them off camping for life? Anyone else camp late in the year? I can see lots of advantages eg: cheaper/less crowded sites/roads less busy, but October is winter.

It will be chilly at night - we did it last year - take duvets AND sleeping bags and if you have electric buy a cheap fan heater x oh and warm socks

Not sure if we'll have room for duvets, but if I bought a load of fleeces and layered them on that would be the same wouldn't it? I find fleeces easier to pack because you can roll them up small and stuff them into spaces.
If I don't put any heating on indoors we will be partly acclimatised Grin.

Key word was in your heading...plan. You know its likely to be chilly so plan for it...sleeping bags, duvets, book EHU, heat packs, lots of layers...any if that lot will see you right. We were away April a few years ago, had to sweep snow of tent most mornings lol lived in fear of finding my toes in the bottom of my socks on waking lol but we survived...and had a fab time! Smile

Ds goes with his scout group every October (east anglia area). But they are very prepared - super warm sleeping bags etc.

Ah good, other people have done it and survived Grin.
I might have finally found a use for the hideous bedsocks I was given several Christmasses ago.
I suppose from our friends' point of view, after camping in Oct anything else will only be an improvement so it won't necessarily put them off will it.

Hot water bottles too!

With the way the weather has been of late you never know...you might be in your bikini come Oct!

A lot of the cold will come from the ground, so ideally a thick airbed with a fleece or wool blanket on top and then thick sleeping bags/blankets/duvets etc.

I don't think that those self-inflatable and apparently super insulated sleeping mats are that brilliant actually (very expensive, feel every bump/rock, not that warm either).

Hope you have a great time.
