My head is spinning with all the different weather possibilities. We are camping in Cornwall. What should I realistically take for three dc 18months, 6 and 8yrs. Thank you!

For how many days, can you wash while you're there?
If I could wash, even by hand, I would go for 2 warm-hot outfits & two cool-weather outfits, per child. Plus what they wore to travel there, and a few extra pants/socks/shoes.

MrsShrek3 · 12/08/2012 21:05

How long are you going for? (have I missed that bit?)
Assuming it's a week or so, we take as many t-shirts as we can find including outgrown ones ditto socks and undies, yes ton of washing when you get back but worth it imho not to be doing loads when we're away. We tend to pack a bunch of shorts etc easy to wash footy shorts and stuff, so no jeans or anything they wouldn't wear a lot or be able to dry easily.

Thanks. Just a week. But five towels then five beach/pool towels seems loads. And trying to fit a buggy in.....

I will leave the jeans then. Got a bit hung up on 'if it's cold'....

I would keep it to 3 towels, I'd share one with the 18m old & expect DH to share with one of the kids, too.

I bloomin' pack light.... :)

lljkk · 12/08/2012 21:12

And I wouldnt' have separate beach towels, either.

Wolfiefan · 12/08/2012 21:15

We use travel type towels. Take hardly any room and dry quickly. Think layers. Eg light trousers or shorts with jogging bottoms/fleece top to cover up if cold. Walking trousers are better than jeans if you get soggy.

I would take a box / bag of shoes for the whole family (to place next to the entrance of the tent). I'd say crocs, wellies and trainers for each child. Then I'd take 6 outfits if you're going for a week, 9 if for 10 days (ie 1 less than the amount of days). I find that some days they soak dirty them straight away, others they wear for two or three days. I would have half wet/cold weather clothes, half warm weather clothes. I would then also take two extra warm tops for each child. One thing I do that really helps is match together top and bottom and wrap them in a carrier bag. The you don't end up with oddly matching outfits in the last few days. Then of course a big bag of too many socks and pants each. Sorry - bit ocd but I find this cuts down on the washing and means that we don't overload our trailer / car - having 4 children, I find that we can really stretch our car if we over pack. I take loads of bin bags to store dirtys in and then if desperate I can take some to the launderette but never had to yet.

Forgot to say, I also take sunsuits (can be used as a spare outfit) and a bit of spare cash in case I really have to buy extra clothes.

MrsShrek3 · 12/08/2012 21:24

we take a towel each. It goes to the shower, beach, swimming pool on the floor everywhere Grin [scummymum]

Shorts are great for camping, along with crocs or similar. Take lightweight fleece blankets to wrap up with at night. Any lightweight trousers that will dry quickly. Leggings for girls will roll up very small and not take up much space. Be prepared for the inevitable fall into a muddy puddle/stream/ditch within half an hour of arriving at the camp site!

Microfibre type towels are handy. I always take a rag rug/old mat to put at the entrance of the tent where the kids take their shoes off to stop mud tracking into the tent.

I always freeze an extra pint of milk and pack of bacon to keep in the cool box that will help keep it cool and be ready for use on day 2.

Thanks everyone. I've noted everything! Am putting outfits in bags as I type :)

another thought. I have a "spares bag" which is a complete set of clothes and undies for each of the children and me, which lives in the car boot. On the occasion when you are out and about / on a beach / in transit / your tent leaks and someone ends up in crisis, they are your saviour. Strange as it may seem, we include a hand towel and a kitchen roll. Both regularly used for all kinds of purposes. like when you run out of tea towels or stupid ds2 needs a sling I'm only talking shorts and t-shirts for the boys, fleece top each, leggings and top for dd, and leggings and shirt for me. Fits into one travel bag and stays in the corner of the car boot. Dry Wink

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 13/08/2012 18:15

Excellent suggestion. Thanks MrsShrek

Microfibre towels are wonderful and are why our car has not actually exploded.
We take sandals and wellies only for footwear but FAR too many clothes (although to be fair ds2 has accidents and ds1 is the messiest eater in the world).
I have learnt to totally waterproof young children if it's raining / the grass is wet as they will find a way to get soaked (in seconds) ... so take waterproofs and wellies.

Napdamnyou · 28/08/2012 02:00

Talcum powder applied to sandy children removes all sand!

Tis a miracle I tells you.

greygirl · 28/08/2012 21:14

We have emergency clothes and towels in our car too. I call it the 'in case we fall in a river' bag. Brilliant if it tips it down or someone sits in a puddle (suprisingly frequent Grin)
