We're off for a week to camp near Great Yarmouth. Anyone about to tell me some super things to do with our 3 and 5yo? Nice pubs for long lunches where they don't mind kids? Best beaches?

TIA!

If you drive down the coast a bit you can visit Southwold and Aldeburgh, where they filmed Grandpa in My Pocket. DD (5) was thrilled to bits to see Jason Mason's house, and the lighthouse and the pier. She was a bit disappointed to find that the cafe is not actually at the end of the pier but soon cheered up playing on the lovely sandy beach.

The model village on the front at Great Yarmouth kept us amused for an hour or so. We had planned to visit the tram museum as well but didn't check the timetable properly and it was shut.

We don't do pubs, so I can't help you there, but we did have a lovely tea in Yesterday's World at Gt Yarmouth. Expensive but wonderful cakes Grin

Gt Yarmouth beach is lovely - sand, sand and more sand :)

Bressingham Steam museum is lovely with little ones - train rides/gallopers.

Yesterday's World is worth a visit. If you need indoor things to do then in Great Yarmouth there is a Sea Life Centre and indoor swimming pool along the front.

There is a motor museum at Caistor Castle, if it's a sunny day it's nice to have a pic nic in the grounds of the Castle.

Africa Alive is an Adventure Park and Zoo that we always used to enjoy visiting.

Ah, thank you all - I'm just beginning to get my holiday excitement going. It'll be even greater when the car's finally packed!

Bewilderwood is fantastic. Even better if you read one of the books before you go.

Emandlu · 02/08/2012 20:05

I was about to recommend Bewilderwood too.

My kids have loved Pleasurewood hills, Africa Alive, Banham Zoo amonst others. There is an indoor roller rink at Great Yarmouth and one in Lowestoft too.

We didn't think the sea life centre was all that great really.
If you are going to go to anything in Great Yarmouth then it is worth visiting tourist information first as they often sell discounted tickets to attractions such as the sea life centre and the model village.

YOu can hire a boat for a day on the broads.
Sea Palling has a lovely beach, with dunes.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 03/08/2012 00:01

Yup, Bewilderwood is truly lovely.

Hidinginthewoods · 03/08/2012 00:57

Wroxham barns is great for kids & adults, lovely beaches all along the norfolk coast... Sea palling and Waxham sands are beautiful & close to GT.yarmouth

Great pub at Burgh Castle it's family friendly, on the broads & the Roman fort ruins are great to explore
Pettits animal adventure park at Reedham
& Fritton Lake on the Somerleyton Estate is lots of fun.
Oooh have fun Smile

Just remembered - we had a great day out in Norwich - the castle was great.

Also we didn't hire a boat, but went on a guided trip by the broads authority. I think the one we got went from wroxham. It was lovely as I wasn't panicking about us driving the thing and the guy was pointing out loads of wildlife and telling us about the surroundings.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 03/08/2012 08:29

Ooh, I had no idea there were Bewilderwood books!

What lovely ideas. I am especially up for not driving a boat!

Thank you all so much - if we do a tiny amount of the things on here we'll have a fab holiday. We always go to the Isle of Wight and thought we'd try something different this year. Grin

Lovely MNetters.

I've remembered what the boat was called - it was the Liana and went from Hoveton, which is quite near to both Bewilderwood and Wroxham Barns.

They do 2 other ones as well but I can't remember the details unfortunately.

Our 2 (aged 5 + 3 at the time) loved bewilderwood too. Aged 7, 5 and 1 they all loved dinosaur world this year, which was a lot more fun than expected - really good outside play stuff, which children liked despite it being a drizzly day. There was indoor play as well but they found so much to do outside we never went in, so don't know if it was any good.

There is a nice pub in Acle called the Acle Bridge Inn. We went on a hired day boat, pulled up and moored at the end of the pub garden Idyllic. There was a kiddies play area (fenced) although we didn't eat, just had a cold drink and an ice lolly.

We love Norfolk, dinosaur adventure was enjoyable, pettits, Africa Alive and the little funfair in Yarmouth called joyland is great for children. You can go on a boat tour of the broads from Horning and Wroxham, worth it to learn about the history. I promise you, you won't be bored, I have been going since I was 11 (not every year though Grin) and still love it [that's 36years].

We went last year but we're not going this year, we're going camping near Scarborough, quite local for us, it will be so nice to just have a 2 hour journey. We were planning on Devon but the 7+hr journey put us off a bit.

Sparklegeek · 13/08/2012 22:16

Can highly recommend the food at the Acle Bridge Inn!
