Guide ropes

How do you fix yours? I see those that are adjusted to the maximum and at a wide angle, then others that chose a shorter length with them pegged just a foot or so off the tent.

Any thoughts?

Bump!

DH was thinking aloud this exact same question!

Firstly and sorry to be pedantic but the correct term is Guy lines or Guy ropes.

They are a very important part of your tent as they will stop it blowing away in the wind. They should be adjusted to roughly half of their length because they stretch when wet and will need to be tightened.

If they are too close to the tent they wont do anything. make sure you put your pegs in at an angle with the point going towards your tent as that gives maximum strength against the wind.

Good luckSmile

medal thanks loads. That's great advice Smile

I agree - it depends how windy it is! If it is calm, we peg them near in (less chance of tripping!) but if it looks set for wind, we peg them out further and tighten everything up Wink

Always put them at the same distance and angle. The weather can change in a few minutes. You may go out in the morning to sun and come back to a storm, in any country. Always peg them in, too.

Forgot to say, unless it says otherwise on your tent's instructions, always peg one guy line to one peg. Put the pegs in at 45 degrees.

We don't bother with the guys unless it's particularly windy. Otherwise, what everyone else said.

Ineedaflippinmedal · 30/07/2012 20:40

sued, I dont know where you go camping or what kind of tent you have but I would never recommend pitching a tent without putting the guys out.

As ILJ says the weather can change really quickly and if the wind gets under your tent you could suffer damage.

If the tent is pegged down firmly it's fine. We have a Vango 6 berth. We do a lot of touring in France. Tent only up for one or two nights at a time, so not worth the hassle of doing all the guys every time.

When I read the title I thought 'all these years I thought they were guy ropes' LOL
