Dh is taking DS for first camping trip this weekend. There is no electric hook up so they are taking a cool box. I don't think there are facilities to refreeze cool blocks so was wondering whether their sausages/bacon/cheese etc will stay cool enough? Are there any tricks to help keep stuff cool as I have this image of them happily chomping on dodgy sausages!

Probably safer not to with meat - perhaps cans of baked beans with sausages in, if they'll stand for it? Cheese may be ok. Salami would be an option for sandwiches since it's designed to be preserved, or you could include some pepperami's; or chorizo, DH could easily chuck a chopped up chorizo sausage, a can of chickpeas, a big can of tomatoes and some greens into a pot over the fire and make a v nice dinner to go with a hunk of bread. Otherwise look up local butcher and tell DH to stop off in the morning if he feels a fry up is important to the trip.

Caught my eye because DH taking DS1 for first camping trip next weekend! But I won't worry about sending food with mine, since I'll be in a B&B around the corner with (8 wk old) DS2 and I daresay that all important sunday morning fry up will lure them to me rather than vice versa :)

I freeze a spag bol, the sausages and bacon then chuck them all in cool box wrapped in newspaper with freezer blocks. They keep cool for a couple of days that way. I haven't poisoned us yet Grin

Individual pints of milk freeze okay as well. Cartons not glass. Also individual cartons of juice.

Send them off with a tablecloth or piece of fabric big enough to completely cover the coolbox. When they get there, soak the cloth with cold water and keep it over the box/bag. Keep wetting the cloth as it dries out. Sounds daft but makes a difference!

Agree with Snowmummy, taking frozen stuff is a good idea, I also freeze bottles of water and use as icepacks. When the ice has melted you have some water you don't have to go to the tap for! Useful for handwashing etc.

We never have hook-up when we go camping. As Selvedge says, put wet cloth over coolbox. Or store milk etc in bucket of cold water in shade with wet cloth over. Use tinned food more than one would at home, also longlife milk. Bacon and cheese will last for a few days in the shade - don't need to be refrigerated.
