Midges - a minor miracle

Piffpaffpoff · 14/07/2012 22:06

thought I'd share this.....I get badly bitten by midges and always have a really bad reaction to the bites. I've tried garlic, taking vit B and antihistamine with little effect. I've been using Skin so Soft with some success but I hate the smell of it plus the greasiness.

Im just back from a week in Aviemore and bought some Smidge when I was there because I'd seen it mentioned in a few places. It's miraculous, I got no bites whatsoever! I don't know what's in it, but it smells ok and it's not greasy either.

However, I'll defer final judgement til after next weekend, we're off to Arisaig for a long weekend and I got eaten alive last time we were there. If it keeps them off me there then it truly will be a miracle!!!

marking my place...

BaggyAndWrinkled · 14/07/2012 23:23

I was bitten over 200 hundred times (SERIOUSLY) the last time I was in France. Going there in 5 weeks, so this is ground breaking news for me.

chipmonkey · 14/07/2012 23:28

They haven't brought out a Smosquito by any chance, have they?

chipmonkey · 14/07/2012 23:29

Doesn't a smosquito sound like a kind of cocktail they would drink on Sex and the City?

olympickibucket · 14/07/2012 23:29

I'm a fan of Jungle Formula, is this stuff better than that?

Piffpaffpoff · 15/07/2012 08:39

Ha ha, glad I'm not the only one who gets so excited about insect repellent!

What I found interesting about it is the midges didn't seem to bother me when I had it on - with skin so soft you still had a cloud of them round you and them on your skin but they just seemed to not bite as much. With this, there just didn't seem to be as many around me. They were still taking chunks out of (non smidge wearing) DH though!

Olympic I haven't tried jungle formula for years so can't say I'm afraid. I can say this is the best thing I've ever tried, I've come home with a bite free face for the first time ever.

Arisaig? Oh lucky lucky you. I'll join the audience waiting to hear if miracles do happen twice - bloody midges stop me from holidaying where I'd most like to, most years. jungle formula is effective but boy, it's strong stuff - I always wonder what the effingjeffing it is doing to my skin.

Don't suppose you can use smidge when pregnant can you?

WelshMoth · 15/07/2012 08:48

I bought three bottles of skin so soft last year. Didn't work for me Sad.

What kind of preparation is the Smidge, Piff? Spray, lotion? Pre-loaded spray gun to zap the fuckers little biters?

Piffpaffpoff · 15/07/2012 13:02

Welsh It's in a tin bottle with a spray but a 'soft' spray like a kitchen cleaner spray rather than a pressurised deodorant one iyswim?

tiddley it says in the blurb about it on the Tiso website that it is Ok for pregnant people. (it also says that it won't melt plastic equipment, which leads me to ask - what does??)

sounds good, i've always found the yellow natural stuff from boots good as well, though. just did a hol on skye without a bite.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 15/07/2012 13:39

this one although i see they've also brought out a 'once' version lasting 8 hours.

tiddleypompom · 15/07/2012 13:40

Oooo, ta!

Jungle formula melts plastic I reckon definitely.

Ponyclubmum · 15/07/2012 13:48

I used expedition 100+ insect repellant in Kenya, Tanzania and Seychelles, and it melted anything plastic. It ruined a lovely pair of sandals :( Didn't get bitten though!

I'm pregnant atm and apparently very tasty, so I'm liking the sound of this Smidge...

snowmummy · 15/07/2012 19:42

Deet melts plastic.

snowmummy · 15/07/2012 19:46

Just looked it up - it looks good. I hate using products containing deet so this looks like a good alternative. I'll be ordering some.

tiddleypompom · 16/07/2012 08:53

Thanks for sharing op

letseatgrandma · 29/07/2012 22:59

Have you had your weekend away, OP? What do you think??

PiffPaffpoff · 13/08/2012 23:31

Sorry, forgot to come back and update! We didn't go to Arisaig after all the weather forecast was diabolical so I cancelled it. Sad

However...I have just returned from 5 days in Aviemore and I am pleased to report I have just 5 bites, despite doing lots of cycling, including one evening ride through actual clouds of midges. The bites are on the inside of my elbow and behind my knees where I didn't take enough care putting it on. I am astonished at how effective it is. And it's quite pleasant to put on too, not like the oil slick that is Skin so Soft.

I'm not sponsored by Smidge by the way, I'm just so utterly thrilled to finally find something that keeps the little buggers away from me. It's a bloody miracle.

Piffpaffpoff · 13/08/2012 23:35

Oh, why is my update not highlighted as the OP? I had name changed for the Lympics, am hoping it just because I go in a muddle with my capitals when I changed back.

OP posts:
Piffpaffpoff · 13/08/2012 23:36

Ah, it was the pesky capitals. Ignore my last two posts - Smidge update further down...

I will be straight round to tisos first thing Tom.

IwishIwasinLondon · 16/08/2012 21:20

Sounds fab!

Do you know if you can apply suncream before or after putting on smidge?

Piffpaffpoff · 16/08/2012 21:43

Not sure - not been that much call for suncream up here this summer! I think I did once put it on on top of suncream once with no ill effects. But I can't say for certain.

IwishIwasinLondon · 16/08/2012 21:56

Ha! I'm thinking for holidays abroad not in the UK!

Thanks though.
