Help me choose a storm kettle

Ok so i've just come back from a most fantastic wild camping weekend with my boys (organised site but camping in woods with fires and no facilities) and have decided that I need a storm kettle.

The most popular makes seem to be Kelly kettle and Ghillie kettle although I know there are others. I am seating in favour of the Ghillie kettle because I like the whistle and you can buy it through Cobb with an adaptor that lets you use it on the Cobb which looks mighty handy! However unfortunately Cobb only do it with the 1l size and I thought we'd need the larger one. What's pushing new in favour picture Kelly kettle is that you can get it in stainless steel which on reading a couple of reviews seems to be harder wearing.

What I don't really know though is what size I would really need for a family of 4 (although often just me and the boys as dh not a fan of camping sans facilities).

Gag posted too soon!

I'd also like to know what people think of the difference between aluminium and stables steel for these plus whether the Cobb kit sounds good or not.

And anything about any other similar kettles or top tips.

Just to tempt me if you have any other campfire gadgets I'd be keen to hear about them! I am already eying up a Dutch oven... (I have a tripod and grill)

we got the ghillie kettle because of the whistle and because it's made in the UK!

DP did like the look of the stainless steel ones but he said they can be more brittle (so potential for leaks?), and they were quite a lot more expensive

I think we have the 1 litre one and it's been fine so far. it's us and 3 children, but we only ever make a max of 3 cups of tea at a time. If your children are older or you camp with other peoiple who'd want a hot drink you might want the 1.5 litre!

We have Kelly's kettle. Dh was given it as birthday present about 8 years ago and still going strong. He uses it most days at work and has had no problems.

I have a decade old ghillie kettle. It's held up fine. With all of them the key to longetivity is never letting them boil dry.

Choose the cheapest + cookset for maximum versatility. I canna be arsed with watching 2 different products so use the kettle almost exclusively + the odd disposable BBQ to get thru a week. I go with just myself & DS or sometimes a couple of friends. I think ours is 1.5 litres & it's fine for four cups in 5 mins of coffee/tea/cuppa soup Grin.

I much prefer it to an open fire with young kids/dogs around. Ideal too for the rainy weather we've been having as won't blow out Grin. I'll tolerate anything so long as I have constant coffee on tap in grotty conditions.

I was planning the Kelly Kettle in stainless steel, because I try to avoid aluminium. Having said that, we all have Sigg bottles, but the aluminium is coated with something or other.

YellowDinosaur What site did you go wild camping at?

YellowDinosaur · 11/07/2012 20:54

Thanks all for your helpful comments. Still undecided. I fancied a stainless steel one but want to be able to use the Cobb adaptor so i'm going to order that then see if a Kelly kettle will fit. Otherwise it will be a Ghillie to fit.

The campsite I was wild camping at is Brockwell Woods near Newcastle Just fab - I've left a review in the reviews section.

I have a stainless steel kelly kettle which gets a lot of use (several times a week) and has been fine for a fair few years.
