How to keep clean?

We are embarking on our first camping trip in a few weeks. It's only 2 nights at a small music festival, so apart from toilets there aren't any other facilities (no showers).

I don't mind any of the potential discomforts (cold etc), but not being able to wash in the morning really freaks me out. I hate not washing and feeling grotty all day really bothers me.

What are your tips for camping cleanliness? I'm thinking wet wipes, but I have to find some way of washing my hair. I know this makes me sound a bit OTT, but it's the one thing I have a 'thing' about IYSWIM and I don't want it to spoil the trip.

Last year at the festival I went to I washed my hair with cold water each morning as I also cannot stand my hair greasy and dirty. We got some special body wipes for washing with too which were good. If it was cold you could heat some water to use?

Mishy1234 · 24/06/2012 19:51

I think that's the only option tiredteddy as I'd rather use cold water than not wash my hair. We haven't got a camping stove yet, as we're just starting out and there will be hot breakfasts/tea & coffee for sale at the site. What body wipes did you take?

Dry shampoo is your friend, it takes the 'edge' off. Otherwise facial wipes and tons of unfragranced baby wipes.

GnocchiNineDoors · 24/06/2012 19:55

Wet wipes and dry shampoo

Just take a load of baby wipes. Bucket of cold water for your hair? Although if you're cold, you might suddenly find the idea of Batiste becomes very appealing.

Having said that, I suspect you are not the sort person who is going to enjoy a festival as you just are grubby most of the time. The toilets are generally rank

Mishy1234 · 24/06/2012 21:14

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly take wipes and look into dry shampoo.

I've been to festivals before DowagersHump and can tolerate the toilets (as weird as that seems!), but they usually have showers which are mostly rank too to be fair, but at least you can get kind of clean. This is a very small festival, so there are some toilets but that's pretty much it.

I know this all makes me sound like a loony and I'm really tolerant of most things, but feeling unwashed is a real issue for me.

You might be able to shower - but baby wipes (not wet wipes) are your friend as you can use them anywhere. I'd suggest you also consider what you could do with your hair if you can't wash it - dry shampoo is good, but maybe tie it back, wear a hat?
My DSD is usually pretty well groomed in the hair dept but when camping doesn't wash her hair daily, doesn't rely on dryers/straighteners but usually puts her hair up a lot and it looks really good. Slightly dirty hair puts 'up' better than very clean hair.

Ah, yes that looks good Number44!

Apparently there will be a standpipe thing for water, so I'm taking a collapsible water canister and the children's flexibath. That should be adequate to wash my hair and do the other necessary 'bits'! It will be cold, but I don't mind that.
