We need a new one. Again. We seem to buy a new one each year. Hmm

Where are we going wrong and what is the best type?

Dunno what's best... But we seemed to get through quote a few and then ( touch wood) seemed to have lucked on a few which have been ok.
If non ehu... We use a couple of hanging gelert ones
If ehu... We use a car inspection light

troutpout · 25/06/2012 13:26

here

daenerysstormborn · 25/06/2012 13:35

we have this and it's brill. rechargable, and you can charge it in the car, there's a hook so you can hang it up in the tent, plus it's got a torch too.

craftynclothy · 25/06/2012 15:13

We have one of these but we bought ours from Home Bargains for about £4.

For lighting up the sleeping compartment while going to bed we have some hanging LED lights from the 99p store! like this, but only 99p And a hanging lamp from Decathlon - a Frendo Ambi'light shaped like a lightbulb. Cheapie ones with a bright or dim option, run on ordinary AA batteries.

For reading I use a Tiny Light like this

Then ordinary torches for trekking to the toilet block.

Otherwise we don't really use camping lanterns. The big ones use too many expensive batteries. I buy AA batteries from the 99p shop, and we don't use many at all. Also the Tiny lights last for ages and the little batteries are v cheap on Amazon, and I use mine as a torch around the tent as well as for reading.

We never seem to cook in the dark, and are either sitting by the campfire or reading.

GobblersKnob · 25/06/2012 19:56

Oh we are light-o-rama when campingGrin

We each have a torch under our pillows for toilet trips, dp's is an enormous maglight for bashing intruders wasps.

We have this hanging in the inner, for night reading, has handy remote, no need to get cold to turn it off.

We have something like this dp accidently binned the charger, so now you wind like a nutter for 3 minutes of crap light, but it gives the kids a job when it's raining.

We have this because camping is not camping without the hiss of gas of an evening, though I shriek like a harpie if anyone tries to bring it into the tent.

And finally we have a UFO light attached to the ceiling of the tent for when we come back in the dark to enable us to find the other lightsGrin

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 25/06/2012 20:45

Gobbler, that first one you linked to has an inbuilt compass Grin Can you imagine taking it to do map reading? Or is it handy for when you get lost on the way to the loo in the night?

There's so much choice! I like the little LED lights Blu, might have some of those anyway.

Need something to read by so might try those book lights. We get through so many lamps I'm reluctant to spend too much.

Or maybe that's where I'm going wrong!

MMOC, yes, it's exactly where you need a compass isn't it? A lantern is so very practical to take hiking Hmm

parno · 28/06/2012 23:16

For years I have searched for a bright cheap lantern. I finally discovered the holy grail of lanterns in home bargains. It was like craftynclothy's but larger and rectangular. Cost less than a fiver and was fab. Easily lit a double compartment enough to read. Definitely highly recommended.

twattock · 29/06/2012 10:49

We've used the campinggaz lanterns for a while-and very good they are too! a brilliant white light which is easy to read by. But you cant get refills for them in france for some reason.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 30/06/2012 22:48

I was in LIdl today and saw one so I bought it. £10 and it has a wind up, car AND plug charger, but it's going back next week. Tried it out in the dark and it's unimpressive.

I think the number of LED lights is important

I bought a £2.99 plastic energy-bulb spotlight thing from ikea based on someone elses recommendation. here

It clamps on so hoping can attach it somewhere when we go away in summer. Plug, obviously. Best lamp we had was a sort of sealed in platic iggle piggle one, made lovely ambient light, them bulb went and cant get another...sigh.

Not found a good lamp (i.e. battery) and too nervous to use a gas one so watching with interest.

poppyboo · 03/07/2012 17:48

Gobblersknob do you use your gas lantern inside your tent? I usually do but now I'm scared to because of the carbon oxide accidents. I too love the hiss of the gas lantern, it reminds me if camping when I was a child.

sillymummy11 · 04/07/2012 21:12

We have 2 lights as one isn't enough really.

we have one of these. It's rechargable, and I found it lasts fine- can't read by it but good enough to see in a large tent by. www.gooutdoors.co.uk/20-led-rechargeable-lantern-p179048

one of these. This is not rechargable but is very flexible- have as a lamp or 4 separate lights- the individual ones hand, are magnetic and have clips and you can have them all different colours if you really want to. It's quite bright. I expect I'll have to pay a fortune in batteries at some point though! www.gooutdoors.co.uk/coleman-led-micro-quad-lantern-p201468

We also have a few of these www.gooutdoors.co.uk/3-led-wind-up-torch-p152179 that are good for reading by. We're too knackered to read for hours...but a small amount of winding provides a good long amount of light.
