Please help a reluctant camper find a nice site in the Lake District

My DH loves camping and has finally got me to agree to it as long as I can take a proper quilt (he likes to pack light) So we have decided on the Lakes, would prefer Windermere side if possible and want nice showers and toilet, we will be taking our 2 year old.

He is determined for this to be a great trip as he wants to have camping holidays like he had as a kid, My only camping trip was with the guides, canvas tents and a chemical toilet so I am a bit worried! Help!

I have had this in reverse. I love camping and dh doesn't.

What I have realised is that in order for him to be relatively happy about it, and therefore for us all to have a better time, we need to go to the type of campsite he likes and not the back to basics site with campfires that I would prefer.

Have a think about what sort of facilities you'd like to have, get your dh to do a Web search based on this and choose one of those.

The only site we've been to is the lakes is fisherground in eskdale which probably isn't close enough to where you need. A good site though, if staffed by camping nazis

This site is great, if a little expensive. It has loads of facilities.

Wow - you can hire your own private bathroom at that site? per day?

That sounds great!

StarlightWithAsteroid · 19/06/2012 20:17

Not sure. We're a bit more rough camping peeps so stuck ourselves away from the hook ups and bar etc. and washed in the river (kidding).

But it is a nice site and a good location. The best pitches IMO for the views, are on the rough camp hillside where you have to work hard to find a flat bit (though they are there.

\link{http://www.thequietsite.co.uk/\the Quiet Site} is supposed to be v lovely

never been, like. & it's Ullswater, up near Penrith, not Windermere. but it does look nice Smile

We take DofE groups to the Lake District and base ourselves in Ambleside at the head of Windermere - a lovely little town centred on the walking/climbing/outdoor activities world. Plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants too though!

How about Low Wray, a Nat. Trust site?

or

Great Langdale - also NT.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 19/06/2012 20:27

In Charlotte Mason?

SauvignonBlanche · 19/06/2012 20:28

StarlightWithAsteroid · 19/06/2012 20:31

I've also heard good things about the quite site.

Going near there shortly as DB has hired a field for all to camp for his wedding!

SauvignonBlanche · 19/06/2012 21:02

Thanks Starlight, much appreciated. Smile

Thanks for all the replies, I like the look of the Park Cliffe site, looks really nice, I must admit I like the look of the pods....don't think DH would want one as they are not outdoors enough!
Now I have the fun of getting camping equipment, I dont think his one burner stove and one man whistling kettle will cut it Grin

I went to the Quiet site recently and would really recommend it, but you are nearer to Keswick/Penrith more than Windermere. We did go to Windermere a couple of days and it took about 1/2 hour in a very nice drive.

The playground/area is good for a 2 year old, they have 3 bathrooms (free and available to all) which can be helpful in bathing younger ones. Also, the bar is fab and there is a little soft play area inside, to the side which keeps them entertained enough for a quick drink. Normal showers/loos/washing up areas are good, and they have two fridges/freezers which you are able to leave food in as well as cool blocks, and a microwave and kettle available, which can be a boon if you go without EHU.

There are some statics on site but the (proper Wink ) campers are over one side. The site isn't massive, yet has the facilities of bigger parks.

We did also go to fisherground and enjoyed it there -totally different sort of campsite. BUT, and it was a big BUT they had far far far too many campers on site for their facilities- the queues for the loos/basins to wash your hands afterwards were longer than for M&S loos pretty much the whole weekend.
