Budgie smugglers only rule on French campsites

Hello

We're booked to go to a camp site in Normandy next month. I know that it's trunks only in the pool as far as DH is concerned (poor man is mortified). What about DC though? 2 of my DC are under 2 - normally I would stick them in UV suits for the pool. Are these allowed or do they have to wear normal trunks/ swimsuit?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm - I should think that they would let DC wear the appropriate swimwear.

But I am guessing!

As far as I know, the reason that they want men to wear the speedos is that they reckon they are more hygienic. In that they are put on just for swimming. If men wear swimshorts - then they will wear them as shorts too -hence they may be more 'dirty' when it comes time for a swim in the pool.

CuppaTeaJanice · 19/06/2012 08:58

I'd email the campsite - sounds like a specific rule for that site so who knows?

I wonder if the place is managed by a pervy woman?!!! Grin

Emandlu · 19/06/2012 09:01

When we were in Belgium last summer both dh and ds had to wear trunks. Ds was 8.
There weren't any little kids in there so I don't know about them though.

RoxyRobin · 19/06/2012 09:05

Men do hate these, don't they? I suppose it's because they show all they have or haven't got - there's no hiding place Grin.

I remember being on a French campsite a number of years ago and seeing a bloke who appeared to have a salami coiled up down the front of his. I was fascinated - I'm sure everyone's eyes were drawn to it. You couldn't help it.

Poor DH - he felt quite inadequate. Never mind, as he keeps reminding me, it's not what you've got it's what you do with it Hmm

shrimponastick · 19/06/2012 09:18

DH can't wear them as he has a stoma- and swim shorts disguise it nicely.

Budgie smugglers would show it all. It has been a deciding factor when choosing our holidays. Sad

shrimponastick · 19/06/2012 09:18

Grin at the salami.

Maybe it actually was!! He had a bread roll in his towel to eat it with later..

I read a thread about this recently having never heard go it before so I
Emailed the site were going to. They don't have a rule but are Brit owners

dumdedah · 19/06/2012 09:40

I think it varies a lot from place to place how strict they are. You would probably be fine for under 2's being in full swimsuits. To be safe though, maybe pick up some swim tops and trunks (or would they be in swim nappies?) then if they decide to get fussy about it you can just take the top off. Decathlon (I think?!?) had some very cheap at one point. They had UV protection and 3/4 sleeves, but can't remember what size they started at.

Ravilious · 19/06/2012 09:42

It doesn't vary - it is the law! No long shorts as they can be worn outside.

You must wear trunks, dh has a very short pair of 'shorts' rather than y-fronty trunks.

I think blokes in pools in those long boardshorts look bloody awful anyway so I think it is a good rule Smile

Ravilious · 19/06/2012 09:43

All public pools have to follow this law, it may vary on privately owned campsites.

aliciaflorrick · 19/06/2012 09:45

My two DCs weren't allowed in the pool in sun suits when they were very little, it was really frustrating particularly as they're both very blond - now they're older it's not so much of a problem, but we did get chucked out of a pool because they had sun suits on. (It's a few years ago now so hopefully the French have become more sun aware - it was an outdoor pool).

Ravilious · 19/06/2012 09:48

It is nothing to do with not being sun aware, it is because sunsuits etc can be worn outside for playing then if you jump in the pool you bring all those germs in with you Smile

My dd3 is white blonde and lots of waterproof suncream and a swimsuit is fine, and regulate the amount of time they are in the sun.

ChopstheDuck · 19/06/2012 09:52

The rule does usually apply to kids too. It's a pita! You can look for this sort of thing rather than full on speedos though.

ds1 used to have UV separates. If you get the seperates, you can take the top off while he is in the pool if you have to and put it back on while they are out.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 19/06/2012 09:57

I think you will be ok with a sunsuit for a toddler. We were at a campsite in France last year. The no shorts rule was enforced and observed but no one said anything about DD's sunsuit nor her shortie wetsuit when I put her in that a couple of days (the water was very cold). There again her sunsuit was one of those from Mothercare made of lycra and was clearly intended for swimming.

DH wore a pair of lycra swim shorts - like tight boxer shorts really - from Decathlon and that was fine but made him feel a bit more comfortable.

Penalty · 19/06/2012 10:13

Wow quick response, thanks v much everyone,

Little trunk things it is then. DS is only 5 months and is blond so it is a pain. He won't be in for very long though I suppose so we should be ok. I'll have a look un decathlon for the tight swim short things.

Board shorts or budgie smugglers, you're still swimming in a sea of pee! Wink

topbannana · 22/06/2012 16:28

We have holidayed in France quite a lot and DS and DH have never been made to wear budgie smugglers (not sure if me or DH was more pleased about this one!)

And yyy roxyrobin there was a Dutch man on the site we just stayed at like that. I have never knowingly gaped at a mans crotch in public before but there I was, rooted to the spot :o

TheFallenMadonna · 22/06/2012 16:32

My DC have been fine in rash vests, which would be like a sun suit I should think, even where the no shorts rule has been enforced. I make DH wear one too in fact.
