Camping capsule wardrobe?

froggydoo · 19/06/2012 00:09

Is there such a thing?

Off to the Loire in July for a week. Need to pack super efficiently - but don't want jeans & t shirts all week.

What do you guys wear?

OP posts:
Caerlaverock · 19/06/2012 09:07

Skirts and tops in fairly light weight material.

Slubberdegullion · 19/06/2012 09:23

Multi level zip off trousers.

Shirts with sleeves that roll and then button up at the elbow.

Hat

I packed a dress, wore it once in six weeks of camping last summer. Waste of space.

Jeans are a nightmare camping. If they get wet they are just shite to dry. Technical fabrics is where it's all at.

Caerlaverock · 19/06/2012 09:28

Slubber she is going to the Loire not the conga. You will be deported if you wear 'technical' clothing within 200m of a chateau.

Slubberdegullion · 19/06/2012 09:32

I bought this shirt last year, in sea salt cream. Wore it All The Time in Forrin. Sleeves go up, sleeves go down, dries like this , really cool fabric, anti UV amundu (loathe sun cream) and it's a death shirt (anti mossie). My fave bit of my camping wardrobe. With the death socks and the buff.

Slubberdegullion · 19/06/2012 09:33

Bof

Surely not.

I technicalled my way through many a Schloss last year. I suspect the Germans coveted my outfits.

nilbyname · 19/06/2012 09:40

Roll everything up into sausages to pack.
To "iron" put on what you want to wear, wet your hands and run them over your outfit. Wait. Then creases will fall out.

I would take-
1 maxi jersey dress
1 short summer dress
1 denim shirt (to be worn as a shirt/jacket)
2 scarves
1 warm cardigan (can be worn over shirt of v cold)
1 pair of shorts
3 vests
2 l/sleeve tops (you can push the sleeves up)
1 pretty top/blouse
1 skirt.
1 waterproof
flip flops
ballet pumps
sneakers
1 chino or colour denim pant
Pj bottoms
Jewellery

Travelling- wear a vest, a 3/4 length sleeve top, a pair of jeans rolled up, sneakers, cardigan, beads, bangles, sun glasses .

All your tops should be able to be layered together, so think colours I would do, nude, grey, coral, blues. Everything you have should work together. Practice putting it all on/off in different combos.

nilbyname · 19/06/2012 09:41

All that should fit into a carry on, given that you will be wearing the bulkiest items.

YellowDinosaur · 19/06/2012 18:45

Hmm... Methinks slubber and nilby's idea of camping is somewhat different :o

Slubberdegullion · 19/06/2012 19:08

yes. So it would seem. Although I also have flip flops and pj bottoms on my list. But where is the pj top I wonder.

GnocchiNineDoors · 19/06/2012 19:15

Essential is a hoodie / fleece for sitting out on the evenings as it does cool down, no matter where you are except maybe the Sahara

A pair of craghoppers which zip off at the knee for walking, general grunginess

Oversized cotton shirt, cool to drap over bare shoulders to keep off the sun and an extra light layer to add / remove as needed

Swimsuit / bikini if swimming is an option

Few vests, tshirts

Skirt - if you wear skirts. Cotton or long maxi skirt

Sun hat

nottersisnotelizabethtaylor · 19/06/2012 19:27

Fetching straw hat.

nilbyname · 19/06/2012 19:31

straw trilby

Grin @ yellow

slubber one of the vests can be a pj top. See...multi use!

Yes, I forgot beach attire. One bikini, or one one piece. Fifties cut legs.

Slubberdegullion · 19/06/2012 19:36

Have no idea what fifties cut legs might be Confused

but what if you dribble or drop weetabix down your nice strappy top in bed, then you can't wear it out. No I'm sticking with sensible camping pjs, or at the very least bottoms and then a proper wicking vest for in bed and a sensible camping top with multi versatile arms for not in bed.

straw hats down roll down small and are also a fire risk

nilbyname · 19/06/2012 19:51

hahahahah Grin at "multi-versitile arms"

You know, a flattering leg, lowish cut.

Slubb, I never dribble gravy, it goes straight in my mouth with the help of my spork (see, I am a practical sort) and lots of bread.

MrsMc82 · 19/06/2012 20:10

not been to foreign climes camping but in this country I've honed my camping 'look' to try and have a shred of style still in there but still practical.........i usually wear leggings, dry fast, easy to slip into wellies without faffing to tuck in and pack up v small.

then i layer up, with a tunic (a vest under if its chilly), cardy, hoody/fleece, gillet, cagoule, hat, scarf etc as it invariably gets colder/wetter...... i find if i wear hiking sock plus my normal sock and my battered-but-still-going-strong short hunters my feet and rest of my bottom never really get cold even in leggings...... and on rare occasion its warm i wear my trusty ancient havaianas. AND if its really warm i've been known to take off the leggings and bear my legs to the world!!

For a weekend I usually take a pair or leggings and tunic per day and 2 hoodies (in case of severe soaking of one), one or two cardigans and tonnes of changes of socks (big believer in keeping feet dry to stay happy!!) if longer i'll still usual take one set of base layer per day and maybe some extra of the other layers.....

To make the packing extra capsule-y (this is the small shred of style i was on about) I usually make sure that the colours or tones of everything that i'm packing all 'goes' together..... ie one white, one navy and one red tunic plus one red and one navy cardy and a scarf that sort of matches too..... I accidentally seem to favour a patriotic/nautical theme whatever I'm doing, work, going out or camping.....it an issue!! hahahah!!........

...........right I'm off over to the style and beauty board to ask about deck shoes or something of that ilk Wink Wink

bigTillyMint · 19/06/2012 20:29

It is usually pretty warm in the Loire. We have been a few times in July /Aug and it has been really hot and sunny. It depends on what you are planning to do - if you are going to go out to chateaux and for evening meals, you may want something smarter. If you are staying on the site, shorts, sun-tops, sun-dress, a pair of jeans and T-shirts and a fleece for the evenings. As well as your swimming/sunbathing togs, of course!

signet2012 · 19/06/2012 20:34

I took 2 pairs of jeans
4 pants
4 socks
Joggers
T shirt
2 bras
Hoody
Fleece.
Towel
Trainers
Walking shoes
Was more than enough for three days Smile

froggydoo · 19/06/2012 23:52

Thanks for the replies

Yeah I think I'm more of the nilby mindset than slubber (sorry slubber).

I'm thinking colours now - going to try and pack things that will all go together. Plus leggings , must get some leggings.

I can't do zip off trousers though,it is a step too far for me. "sports wear" just makes me angry.

kahlua4me · 20/06/2012 12:20

Last year in France I took several dresses, 2x fleeces, 1 pr of leggings, 2x shorts, 4x t shirts, socks and trainers, crocs and sandals, pjs. Oh and 2x swimdresses.

It was so hot that I only really wore swimdresses for the fortnight! They dried really quickly so no need to get changed.

I did sort out colours so that all went with all. I find dresses are easier as no need to match them up so I can take less. Also i do tend to do one lot of washing when away which cuts the amount down.

Just took what I wear at home in the summer.

YellowDinosaur · 20/06/2012 13:51

What is a Swimdress?

bigTillyMint · 20/06/2012 16:50

A dress you can swim in?
actually, I likey Grin

MegBusset · 20/06/2012 17:11

I just take jeans/leggings (do have technical trousers but desperately unflattering - am a fairweather camper anyhow), base layer tops, fleece, hoodie, warm hat, waterproof, flipflops, waterproof boots.

kahlua4me · 20/06/2012 22:15

I have one swim dress similar to your link from Simply Be and a swim skirt with tankini from Lands End. They are fab as easy to wear, flattering and dry quickly. Oh and easy to swim in!
