I don't have a lot to spend - preferably fifty quid or less...

I'd like something longish, not tiny and super fitted; comfy, yet still vaguely stylish. Not lightweight, heavy and seriously warm.

Any recommended makes? Berghaus, North Face? Regatta?

It's a girly question but advice gratefully received!!

Watching this, as i went camping last wkend, and I was freezing! I don't do cold!

sassytheFIRST · 15/06/2012 21:35

Can I recommend thermals esp at night - under pjs if really chilly or instead of pjs if normally cool. I put pjs on as soon as it goes dark if it is just us and we are in the tent so therms go on too.

gerbo · 15/06/2012 21:48

We have thermals/base layers which are fab, and are snug at night as all four sleep in one pod. It's just sitting out in the evening etc. I could do with a bright cheerful snug fleece and wondered what people recommend.

And why are most fleeces in grim colours?! Navy and black aren't exactly forgiving when bare faced and exhausted following a wriggling two year old playing up all night.......

I'm watching too. Camping in scotland next week - chilly!

Piffpaffpoff · 17/06/2012 22:14

Yes to thermals. Staying warm is all about layering so I would go for long sleeved thermal top, thin pullover style fleece, then a thicker zip up fleece. Try Go Outdoors or Decathlon if you have one near you.

I have a nice thin North Face fleece that has slightly longer sleeves with thumbholes in them so it's a bit like wearing fingerless gloves. For such a small design change, it makes a really big difference in keeping hands warm!

I have nasty lidl thermals. Is M&S the place to go?

fridayfreedom · 17/06/2012 22:33

M&S don't stock them at this time of year...tried to get some a few weeks ago. Eventually got some in Cotswold camping in the sale. Also got some in TK Macs.
re fleeces, Berghaus and north face are more expensive than regatta. I think the trick is to go and look and see which ones you like. Layers help, I have a thin fleec then another jacket type over the top. I wear these in the evening with tracksuit bottoms and thermals if nec...nice look!! but who cares if I'm warm

FourArms · 18/06/2012 07:33

And get a sheepskin to sit on - makes a massive difference!

dotty2 · 18/06/2012 12:34

We were freezing camping at half term and I discovered the joys of sitting with my feet on a hotwater bottle, and a blanket tucked over my knees. Felt somewhat geriatric, but warm.

craftynclothy · 18/06/2012 13:44

I wear one of dh's thick jumpers over my clothes and then have a couple of blankets (one for over me and one to wrap round my shoulders) for sitting around in an evening. Also a pair of thick wooly socks.

tyaca · 18/06/2012 18:00

if you can hack the grimness, then Sports Direct is the place to go. Loads of choice, dirt cheap inc brands such as North Face.

not in sportsdirect, but i'd buy this one if i could justify cost.

fossil97 · 18/06/2012 18:41

Wool is a lot warmer than polyester I think

eg. here?
Or one of those teddy-bear fur fleeces?

Or a Proper Woolly Jumper IYSWIM

UptoapointLordCopper · 18/06/2012 22:24

For sitting out - winter coat. Grin Seriously, last time (Jubilee weekend) I was hardly cold. Winter coat + fleece + a hundred cotton layers underneath, for sitting out. Strip till right temperature to go in sleeping bag. Easy and NOT COLD.

Ineedalife · 19/06/2012 16:21

I second the winter coat Grin

I have a thinish snowboarding jacket made by Dare2be, it is waterproof, windproof and slightly padded. It is perfect for chilly evenings and doubles as a waterproof with just a thin jumper underneath on warm damp days. I live in it on chilly camps and best of all, I paid £13 for it from TKmaxx.

Oh and wear a hat, you lose loads of heat through your headGrin

Look on the dare2be website, good quality gear at a very reasonable price.

good luckSmile

Also bring a soft wide scarf that can be used while sitting out as well as over the sleeping bag, over head, over eyes.
