Are you brave enough to risk it?

Yes

iknowwho · 14/06/2012 22:31

Not. A. Chance.

MegBusset · 14/06/2012 22:34

We went in half term and had a great time. Only for two nights though! Will go again but not til the weather settles down a bit.

Selks · 14/06/2012 22:34

Was going to camp during an art week in Devon in July, but have now snaffled myself a cosy B&B.

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 22:35

apparently first couple of weeks in July are going to be nice, and then again in August (although i realise that long-term forecasts are likely to be way out)

but to be fair, i booked ours ages ago and there is no way i'm going to tell my kids that we aren't going now!
bit of rain never hurt anyone, and we can't afford to do anything different, so camping it will be Grin

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/06/2012 22:35

Is it not just miserable in constant rain?

How do you cope?

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 14/06/2012 22:38

How do you cope? beer then wine and if all else fails gin Wink

Bunbaker · 14/06/2012 22:38

I hate being cold. I have camped in this kind of weather before, but I wouldn't do it now. I would rather stay at home.

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 22:40

you wear waterproofs Grin
and you look for indoor attractions to visit, or ones with a bit of both.
you have a nice big tent so the kids can play inside

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 22:40

oh and for the cold? thermals and a primark fleecey sleepsuit for night time

MegBusset · 14/06/2012 22:45

Fleeces, wellies and waterproofs for everyone
List of dry places to visit nearby (NT membership is good)
Lots of biscuits and tea (and wine)
We find nights absolutely fine in just PJs and sleeping bags, not a huge tent so warms up quickly :)

Lucycat · 14/06/2012 23:04

we are off to the south of France!

LostInWales · 14/06/2012 23:10

I have 2 weeks camping booked in August. We have a ferry booked to Spain and contingency funds for cheap motels just in case Grin. We camped last year in France, it poured for almost a week, the children were sick and it was still the best holiday we ever had although the villa in Italy the middle week helped Grin

Yep - been at Easter and again over the Jubilee weekend - some good weather too (occasionally). Off again in July for a weekend and in August. However, our proper holiday this year might be moved to a villa in Spain rather than a campsite in France just in case it is the only sun we are going to get....

Bunbaker · 15/06/2012 07:11

Thermals and warm clothes aren't enough for me. I need ambient warmth to camp. Besides, I can't sleep in a tent, there is too much noise outside. I can't even sleep with the window open at home because of outdoor noises (and we live in a quiet cul de sac).

Selks · 15/06/2012 07:21

But campings just no in the cold and rain... you can't do the bits that make camping good like barbules, sitting outside in the evening, running around with bats and balls, fires....in the rain it's just survival mode - is the tent leaking, get in and out as quick as possible, freezing wees in the small hours........Nooo not for me thanks.

Selks · 15/06/2012 07:21

Barbules = barbies

MrsNouveauRichards · 15/06/2012 07:38

We have booked our first camping trip for first week in July and Dammit we are going! I am very concerned we should just get a boat instead, but it will be a great holiday, I just need to pack enough Baileys :o

troutpout · 15/06/2012 08:04

I'm ok with rain...You can got out ... Hit museums etc...and when you are inside you are warm and dry. It's wind that gives me the willies.
Ive got 2 weeks booked in Cornwall in July .

Bunbaker · 15/06/2012 09:14

"It's wind that gives me the willies."

Wind is not a camper's friend. We were unfortunate enough to have a tornado in France one year. It flattened most of the camp site - the marquee flew up the field and all the large frame tents went down. It was only the little ridge tents like ours that survived, although the fly sheet ripped off and the rain came through the non waterproof inner. We all ended up having to borrow some blankets from the Red Cross and sleep in the farmer's barn for the next few days.

It was a memorable holiday for the crappest camping weather I have ever endured. That and Elvis Presley dying a few days later.
