How old were your DC when you first went on a camping holiday?

And, if you have more than one, how long until it is bearable with more than one under five?

At 8weeks we went for a weekend.

Then at 14 weeks we went for two months. No ehu either. I must have been mad.

Last summer - DSs were 4 & 6.5. I wanted them both to be able to go to the toilets alone so I wouldn't have to traipse backwards and forwards to the toilet block.

In the end there were toilets at the end of our row, within eyesight so it was super easy from that point of view.

We had bad weather (Vendée) but it didn't bother the children.

I think dealing with potties/nappies would be a bit of a nightmare (mind you we used reusables so that might be what would put me off!).

Dd1 was 2.7 and dd2 10 months.

Last year we camped round Europe (4,000 km drive) for 4 weeks with a 4.9 and 2yr old.

DS camped a fortnight ago for his 2nd birthday. Absolutely loved it.

Mine were 6 months and just 3. We went with my SIL and her four kids, who were aged between 1-7. We must have been mad! It was OK, although quite hard work breastfeeding at night when it was freezing cold. It's infinitely easier now that's a thing of the past!

We had a gap from 39w pregnant to 3 years old! And I am pleased we did.

I had heard too many tinies wailing in adjacent tents to want to do it myself, but MASSIVE respect to anyone who takes an under 2 camping!

Guy rope tripping and stove safety were also concerns of mine, as well as wanting to get DC to an age where he could accurately pee into a fabric conditioner bottle at 3 am!

Ds was around 18 months when we first started. In a way it was a lot easier at that age as he was happy to just potter about with us, vs now (at 4) where he actually wants to go out and do things. [lazy] No experience of more than one, but would be interested to hear too.

PrettyInDecadence · 13/06/2012 21:05

I think we might wait for a couple of summers - was thinking of next summer but DC2 (depending on when they decide to make an appearance!) will be around a year old and DS will be 4.

Sorry forgot to finish that post! We might try a bank holiday trial run in may though.

9, 6, 5 and 2 - went this Easter and it was fine - we waited until the youngest was potty trained cos I couldn't face dealing with dirty nappies (and smells) in the tent.

Last year with a 6 4 and 2 year old. In France, campsite near the beach and thankfully the weather was great. We did ten days, going back this summer for 14. Would go for more but don't want to spend time hanging around the laundrette....I know that clothes shouldn't be the reason to put you off but we can't take much as our tent is huge. The tent has two rooms. The older two were together, youngest in travel cot in other room and we set up each night in the main compartment. We took a travel cot as I was paranoid about lo escaping during the night....obv very unlikely but still...it was our first time. It was fantastic as the site was so good and it actually felt like a holiday!

hettie · 14/06/2012 11:52

both around 6 months old.... with 2 under 5 we've been for 2 weeks, only possible of weather is kind to you (and defo helps if there are other kids to pay with)

hillbilly · 14/06/2012 13:55

DD was 4 and DS was 2
