Cheapie Supermarket tents - opinions?

In the spirit of optimism, rather than realism, I have bought a 25 quid tent for me and 2 little DDs. It was from a "well-known" supermarket. Now I remember a somewhat um, alcohol-enhanced convo with someone at a party who told me that the supermarket tents are all crap quality and not to bother. Anyone used them? We are not serious campers (pretty wussy really Blush) but I don't want to waste my money?

they are brilliant for festivals and fair weather camping in the garden.

We went camoping in 3 tents last summer and one night it rained. the cheapo 25 quid Asda 2 man tent was the only one that stayed dry!

H and I bought a 4 man pop up tent from Tesco about seven years ago we did a lot of camping in that and even took it all over Australia where it withstood some pretty shocking storms. It cost us £50 and we only upgraded last year when the zip went.

That's what we started with too - a cheap way to find out if the family enjoy camping before you spend £££s on something better.

there is an option on if you get to enjoy camping or not?

learn something new everyday, please don't tell my children, as they know no different.

My only complaint about my supermarket 4 man (or was it 6 man?) tent is that it is actually an 8 man tent and rather massive! I no longer have a car so need someone with a car (and the space) to take it.

It'll be fine if you camp in good weather.

Ime, they're not the best at coping with much wind or rain.

That tent was brilliant just went up like an umbrella, then you threw fly over the top and attached to poles with velcro - done!. Never seen another one but would definitely buy one for H to takes on his blokey surf trips (no way is he taking my beautiful bell tent)

My £25 tent from Asda was great in a weekend of constant fine rain/drizzle. Did the job, kept us dry.

Just don't buy a single skin tent. The condensation will be worse than the rain.

Cheap tents lack frills. Not actual frills, obv, but things like two way zips, an additional screen door to sleeping pods, multi-directional opening doorways, SIG in porch, handy pockets. All of which you can manage without on short trips.

Even supermarket tents have to be fit for purpose.

Thanks - arf at "fine weather camping" though. Would need to emigrate for that Grin
