8 week old in a VW campervan?!

Am I mental to think this is possible?! Baby is due any day and we really want to go away in our campervan in the summer holidays when OH is off work (he's a teacher) but the baby will only be about 8 weeks old. We're not going too far as we live in Norfolk so are just heading to the coast for 4 nights. Does anyone have any experience of attempting this before I book? Thanks!

I took my 9 day old camping in a tent post-c-section. Van sound positively luxurious!

I would, luckily I'm due early December and won't be expected to go until Big Bang in April!

If you can't manage, just pack up and come home :)

Ha! Loopy that's amazing. Going by all the horror stories I've read I wouldn't have expected to brush my teeth by 9 days after birth, even if I'd just breathed the baby out.

you'll be fine, apart from nappies, wipes and oodles of changes of vests and babygros (which are weeny and won't take up much space) they don't need much else at that age, except food....... if you're bf-ing then you'll just need your boobs and if your ff-ing you can take treat yourself to a job lot of ready made cartons for 4 days..... (you might have ehu so can sling your steriliser in or get some cold water steriliser tablets....)
you'll any by the time your lo is 8 weeks old you'll feel like an old pro! Enjoy

We've been camping with our 2 year old a few times now. Earliest was when they were 6 months, and went to a really basic campsite in Llyn Peninsula in Wales, quite a remote location and had to go through Snowdonia to get there- challenging stuff but well worth it! Went in a camper which is much more preferable to a tent I think and we had an awning so didn't have to pack everything away when we left the site.

Can you get a pop up tent to use for storage? Ihadone of those big qercha ones when I had a camper van.

Mehgan · 16/06/2012 13:28

That's a good idea...the thing I like about the awning is that it feels quite secure to leave stuff in when you drive off, although obviously no more"secure" then a tent at the end of the day"

Go this year! It will be much much easier than next year....Baby will still be in its Moses basket- you can put it on the floor, or in bed with you, whichever suits.

Hi Lola,
We camp in our Commer van all the time (same size as vw) we took my baby when she was 8 weeks and her bruv was 3. It was a doddle. I was breast feeding tho so made it easier. Basically she slept all the time and just fitted in. We are camping this weekend but its the first time since she started walking so i think it will be less easy this time! Have fun x

We bought our van (bit bigger than VW) when dd was 11 weeks and went camping when she was 13 weeks I think. Worked well.

The worst one was when she was she was learning to walk - kept falling over and however well we tried to pad the odd bits of seat, cupboard etc she still ended up hurting herself. A trip four weeks later - no probs!

And the awning was brilliant for pushchair, booster seat, car seat etc as they came into and went from our lives. Under the van, however well we tried to wrap them up, they always got wet.
