Camping and wind breakers? Why?

lisad123 · 06/06/2012 12:16

Sitting here onsite looking about there are now quite a few campers with wind breakers all around. Im not talking one up to shield cookers and BBQ but shutting themselves away with 2-3 breakers :(
Why do they do it? It feels like we are losing the community feel.
What do you think?

it is weird, esp as they normally have huge tents to hide away in anyway.

StarlightMaJesty · 06/06/2012 14:23

It's a territorial thing.

I used to ate the idea but after attending a busy festival where a camper parked with its exhaust in our entrance I feel it may be time to ge one ourselves.

iloveACK · 06/06/2012 14:25

We have one but rarely use it. We do take it with us though & use it if we feel the need for a bit more privacy (but depends on the site & how close the other tents are!!) Grin

I like my wind breaks it's like having a little garden for your tent.

I had no idea other campers looked down their noses at my wind breaks.

I noticed that this this weekend just gone up in the lakes OP. I think it was mostly larger groups that did it tho tbh, and I don't see the harm! I was on a trip with just the two of us, so we did chat with our neighbours & fellow field dwellers this time Wink

I do however camp quite often with a large-ish group and we tend to keep ourselves to ourselves anyway. The kids will go mingle with other kids on site, but us old-uns tend to sit round chatting & drinking together without much interaction with others. Sometimes I do get a bit chilly, what with all cold beer & not much movement other than the yakking so I thought I might make sure we have at least 3 for our next trip Grin

I do already have one myself which we use to stop the bbq etc going out perched on a hill in the windy lake district

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 14:33

I would feel a bit exposed lolling on my fancy new reclining camping chair without my windbreak.

Vajazzler · 06/06/2012 14:38

When we camp we use a series of windbreaks to create a garden to fence in the toddler. The older ones roam free but he's too little.

Oblomov · 06/06/2012 14:43

I agree with OP. No one minds if you have one protecting your bar-bey. But the way its done these days seems to cut off all sense of community and chit chat. I don't like that.

Wolfgirl · 06/06/2012 14:45

Hmm Hmmmm not thought about the issue of privacy.... but thinking about it... yes, it would make sense. But it does exclude, and for me... camping is about community.

ah well... each to their own Grin

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 14:47

I still manage to chat to my neighbours even with my windbreaks, its a bit like chatting over the garden fence.

lisad123 · 06/06/2012 15:41

Looks like spilt opinions. We grew up camping and never had wind breakers. We have two in our campers but used them once, felt very lonely and they are a pita to put up so gave up Blush

Oooh usualsuspect tell me more about your reclining camping chair. Sounds awesome. Envy

LeeCoakley · 06/06/2012 15:48

I noticed the absence of windbreaks at the weekend at Hertford but we were in the caravan field so I don't know what the tenters were up to. But it was a sheltered site so maybe that makes a difference?

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 15:54

it's this one

Well actually my DP had a blacks voucher for christmas and bought it, but I will fight him for it Grin

Cockwomble · 06/06/2012 15:59

I use them for privacy and to break the whistling wind flow. I like to sit out and read a book and have endless brews and speak only to my DH. I don't want to interact with anyone. I have no children though so I suspect this is why I'm not bothered by the hippy community thing!

Aboutlastnight · 06/06/2012 16:06

As last time the 'communuity' amounted to one man shouting at his seven year old: " I'm gonnae skelp yer arse if ye dinnae shut the fuck up..."

I was glad of my windbreak

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 16:08

When my kids were little they buggered off to play with the other kids and we sat behind our windbreaks drinking wine tea

LeeCoakley · 06/06/2012 16:13

Also it's a little protection against stray footballs. Grin

Lucycat · 06/06/2012 18:24

It's such an English thing - we once stayed at a site called hell Trevornick in Cornwall and we counted a 32 pole windbreak contraption surrounding a small village of tents. It was very scary.

On the continent they just don't do them. You just sit out the front of the tent and smile at people passing in the sunshine. Smile

caerlaverock · 06/06/2012 18:48

Exactly lucycat. My smile does tend towards the rictus if the neighbour is in speedos and performing yoga

bibbitybobbityhat · 06/06/2012 18:52

We stayed on a campsite in Northern Italy not too long ago and there were very few English families there (not really within driving distance) but the ONLY tents that had windbreaks out front also had a car with a GB number plate.

Tis anti social.

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 19:15

Blimey I never knew campers were so judgey

usualsuspect · 06/06/2012 19:31

I've stayed at Trevonick, I loved it Grin

Burgermuffin · 06/06/2012 19:38

I thought from reading the thread title that you were talking about loud farts being heard through the canvas Blush.
We have been away at the weekend and put our new wind break up for the first time to try it out (were given it free with the new fc). It's quite compact and we found it useful for sheltering a small table and a couple of chairs while we had a quick cuppa in the open air between showers. We would usually have an awning for longer trips which I think is more of a barrier than a wind break tbh.
