alexsmum, I have a camping for France list of things we take if it would help? I can try and copy it here but may have to cat it to you instead! It is certainly easier with so much provided. We used to go camping where we had to take EVERYTHING and then no room in car for anything else! Just think of all the wine and french bread, croissants....ahhhh!!!! If your kids like baked beans, that is about the only thing I recommend you take from here. We used to take loads of stuff (that was 9 years ago) but now you can get most stuff in their supermarkets. We love going to France and I reckon you will have a lovely time! I will try and get the list sorted out for you.

Blandmum · 24/02/2006 16:37

love shopping in France. there is a Huge hypermarket in Ollone Sur Mer which has the best fish shop I have ever seen. And a fantastic cafe where we used to have luch with the kids. Dirt cheap and they did some great stuff. I know it sounds sad, eating in a supermarket....but the food was good , quick to get and easy on he pocket. the kids loved it!

Hi JJJ, we are ariving 21/8 for 12 nights, then 2 nights at Parc des Alicourts! Could see you there My DD is 15 & DS will be 11 in August - but he is no good at Football! He likes swimming, diving & playing guitar (& computer). He will have his gameboy with him though, & we take a laptop for them to watch DVD's on the journey - so if it rains????

jumpingjackflash · 24/02/2006 16:55

Rain??!!! I hope not!! We have always had brilliant weather. We always used to go in May/june and take them out of school but have to go in August now. Next year I am going to insist we try a different area so may read this thread again to get some ideas. MW why are you going with Siblu is it because Matthews (never heard of them by the way) are not on that site? Maybe we can try them one day. I would love to try the Ardeche - have you done this area? I just love all that wine, french bread, lazy evenings, lazy days come to think of it! Going around the markets, getting fish and bbqing etc, etc, lying in the sun...... Ahhhh roll on the summer!!!

Milliways · 24/02/2006 17:00

Matthews don't do many sites, and their one on the Med has No shade & nothing to do! (according to reviews read). I want to try their one at Lacanou Ocean which looks great though.

We went with Haven (Siblu) for many years until extreme budget change - but going up a bit this year, although in their smallest van this time!

I can't wait

jumpingjackflash · 24/02/2006 17:13

MW where is the site (the ocean) one you mentioned?

alexsmum · 24/02/2006 17:13

jumping jack flash that would be brilliant.i will have to change my profile so that it accepts cat.
you lot have got me even more excited now! it sounds fab.
they don't like beans, no, so won't bother taking lots of stuff with us! love the idea of the bread and cheeses and wine!
would like to get out and about and see stuff .we are only there a week so will have to balance being out and about with beach/pool.
we will definitely do the water park.

Sorry - got called away. Lacanou Ocean is Further South, on West Coast, just above Gascony. Friend has been & says beautiful (I love Gascony). Mathews have a site which looks good.

Gotta go now - swimming!

crunchie · 24/02/2006 17:37

Surfermum I went to Le Clarys plage a could of years ago and it was fab.

Custy Eurocamp is reasonable outside the main summer holiday times, we go in the May/June 1/2 term and it is about £300 for a week in a tent. My kids don't do mobiles, they LOVE the romance of the tent

However this year it looks like DH will be working during that holiday so I have said HE WILL take 2 weeks off in the summer and we'll do france with our own tent. Perhaps a week in the Vendee and a week in Loire. I must make sure we get a fridge though I like my wine chilled in teh summer

Surfermum · 25/02/2006 12:29

Alexsmum - we had a Focus caravan last year and have booked one again. They are the basic one, but absolutely fine and it was better than a tent and having to traipse to the loo in the night. We got sunloungers and a picnic table outside ours too. You will have a ball.

Which sailing did you opt for? We did the "vomit comet" both ways Poole/Cherbourg last year, but we live in Poole, so it wasn't worth us going to Dover, and it was great to get in at midnight and be home and in bed within 15 mins. Dh used to work on those ferries too so we got very well placed for getting off the ferry quickly and dd and dsd got to go on the bridge. No upgrade to club class though as they were full! We went for the same sailings this year but have to come back on the slow ferry as the fastcat was full.

Thank you Crunchie. It's always nice to get a recommendation. I liked the look of Lacanou Ocean too Milliways, I think there's surf in that part of France, so am bearing it in mind for next year.

alexsmum · 25/02/2006 21:01

surfermum-thanks for the reassurance about the van.are the beds comfy etc?
i just couldn't face having to use a public loo for a whole week.
we are sailing portsmouth to caen at 8.45am, so quite sociable hours.as i have no experience of this don't know what the crossing will be like.
tell me more about the focus and the matthews holidays? i'm dying to hear all about it!

Surfermum · 26/02/2006 15:07

I don't remember having trouble sleeping, so I'd say the beds were fine. But having said that we did polish of a bottle or two of wine each evening .

Milliways · 26/02/2006 19:42

Surfermum - plenty of surf in Lacanou - but loads more at Le Vieux Port campsite in Gascony. It was surfers paradise.

Billster · 27/02/2006 21:01

Surfermu, Le Vieux Port is def worth the journey. I am a suferwife and this Sept will be my fourth time to Le Vieux Port. Fab site, fab pools, fab beach and fab town. Lovley towns nearby and great cycling too.

Love it so much it is even hampering my attempt to choose a non surfing week elsewhere!

Surfermum · 27/02/2006 23:42

Sounds like we've chosen our 2007 holiday already then. All I have to do now is convince the rest of 'em (or shall I surprise them? Grin.

Milliways · 28/02/2006 17:03

Surfermum - we have Le Vieux Ports own brochure here if you want it (not much of it, might be better on website), but let me know & I can post it to you.

If you do go, let me know, we've had some fab trips out from there - including one with cable cars, chairlifts etc in the summer! I'll give you the details.
