We are not normally organised enough to book anything

We have always find somewhere, but we tend to go second half of August, usually holidays in France are mid July-mid Aug. Towards the end of August even the most popular campsites empty, but kids clubs etc stop too, which we don't use anyway. End of July/Aug you will probably find somewhere if you are inland a bit and not too fussy where you stay. If you have a choice go later in august, it's sometimes cheaper too. Many campsites have sat as changeover day, so if you get there early you might be lucky.

Thanks! We are in Scotland so have to be back before mid august and h can't get off until end of July think we will wing it

It also of course depends where you are going, coastal ones are busier, some bits of med are manic. We try to start looking about 3/4pm in a busy area. We're coming up to Scotland camping next week and hoping to wing it too!

Which part of Scotland? I can recommend!

We are wanting to see cousins in Edinburgh, so somewhere near there, I'd like to go back to Glasgow where I went to Uni, and Loch Lomond and Tobermory for the children! Dh will want to see some mountains, he was talking about Cairngorms, but Glencoe might work better with the schedual, which will be tight! Will probably pitch a few nights on each side and do day trips. Not too sure whether Tobermory will be worth the effort/cost but the children might like seeing Balamory and I've never been.

Where are you going in France? We usually head that way so children have been to 11 European countries/principalities (and Wales) but not Scotland. They are really excited about going to another country!

we never book - never had any problems as we tour and there are so many campsites in france

god you are going everywhere! glencoe red squirrel campsite is nice but midgetastic.

I LOVE the cairngorms and the forestry commission campsite at genmore is lovely if pricey, with a beach on loch morlich. you can hire canoes and bikes.

Love mull, the campsite at tobermory is great, also if you had all the time in the world there is great camping at the bottom of the island near uiskin.

we are in edinburgh so obv. never camped here! closest we have camped is here at dunbar , it is a great campsite next to a gorgeous beach.

never camped at loch lomond as always assume it will be v. busy. ardgarten camping and carvaning site is as close as we have been, v. nice site.

hope you get good weather.

we are doing dover calais so will prob. do loire, chinon etc. if not knackered maybe even further. ideally Aveyron but too far.

Brilliant thanks for the tips, will go and google them, not necessarily going to stay at Loch Lomond, but would like to drive that way to Glasgow, as I always sing about it to the girls when they go one way on a bank and I go another way, though I have explained the origins. If dh got his way we'd probably go seeking his ancestors in Thurso, but think will keep it a bit more modest. Hopefully they will recognise Tobermory, we went to Southwold (Grandpa in my pocket) and they just didn't get it, they are older now though. (we don't just visit Cbebbies filming sites, honestly - it will only be our second).

Anyway, back to your trip! We have often stopped at Samur (though each time vow never to go to the one on the island due to night time trains), and have never had a problem finding a site. Bring a good guide book, municipal sites can be v cheap, but basic, but that's the beauty of a tent, it doesn't actually matter.

Tobermory campsite looks v tempting, dh thinks maybe a few days there, he's currently googling mosquito net hats, so I'll be the one with the bee keeper if anyone else is camping in Scotland next week!
