Where would people recommend?

I would like to stay somewhere with showers, toilets and where campfires are allowed.

Have seen these ones mentioned a few times - anyone been? What are they like?

Durdle Door

East Fleet Farm

Wood Farm

Steeple Leaze Farm

Eweleaze Farm

Eweleaze is nice, but can be crowded in the popular fields. There is supposedly a max of 400 tents and I'd have said there was at least double that when I was there a few years ago.

Mombojombo · 27/05/2012 08:15

Durdle Door is nice - there's a wooded quieter area if you want to get away from loud families. Pub on-site (if I remember rightly...) and good shop & toilet block. All round good site, not least because of it's amazing positioning overlooking Durdle Door. Good base for walking etc.

fivegomadindorset · 27/05/2012 08:17

Durdle door is just over the hill from me, no campfires though.

fivegomadindorset · 27/05/2012 08:17

There are also a few campsites down in Wool which is a couple fo miles away.

hettie · 27/05/2012 11:30

Have been to steepleleaze and eweleaze.....
Eweleaze glamper's united... v nice and all that (great farm shop own beach etc) but bloody expensive and possibly a victim of it's own success...
Steepleleaze is great (for us), lots of enormous fields, camp where you like, but bugger all facilities (one loo for the lot of you last time I was there!)

VivaLeBeaver · 27/05/2012 13:08

I think that Eweleaze is cheap - but its only me and dd that go. I see they charge per person so for us its cheaper then many other sites but I guess if you have a lot of kids it adds up.

Remember that all the Olympic sailing events are taking place down there - so book soon and expect Olympic bustle if you are going during the Olympics!

We went to Rosewall last year. The location is good, it was pretty clean and has access to the rocky beach and a pub at the end of the road. Unfortunately we didn't have a great stay though. We were there for 4 nights and for some reason, we seemed to be the target for every idiot to pitch on top of us i.e. dangerously so! No-one seemed bothered, but I thought it was a bit of a fire hazard, not to mention downright irritating being surrounded by noisy idiots and having no space to sit out in peace even though there was space elsewhere.
It also seemed the place to be if you like to fly powered hang gliders at 6 am and boy were they noisy. They were literally taking off the other side of the hedge from us. Not sure if this was a regular occurrence or not.
We probably were just unlucky, but we won't be rushing back.

nappyaddict · 29/05/2012 15:52

hz Have you got details of North Leaze Farm? Where is it? I googled and found one in Swindon, Wiltshire - is that the one?

And what are composting toilets?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 29/05/2012 15:55

Ah is it Northdown Farm?

Does anyone know if Steeple Leaze Farm has it's own website?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 30/05/2012 12:03

East Fleet Farm and Wood Farm don't allow open fires or fire pits - only BBQs.

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 30/05/2012 12:45

This one's in East Sussex but we have had Park Farm recommended to us which also allows camp fires.

I've seen Burnbake mentioned on here a few times, but doesn't allow campfires.

nappyaddict · 30/05/2012 13:02

Oh and my friend's been to North Morte Farm in North Devon which she said was fab - again BBQs but not campfires.

Doh, sorry it is Northdown Farm. Will update the blog. Composting toilet is basically where all your doings drop down into a big hole in the ground under the toilets, over the top is a normal loo seat, in a little wooden hut with a door and locking mechanism. At Eweleaze (and Northdown I presume) there is a huge hippo sack thing in the hole, it is filled with sweet smelling branches of conifer or something. When you have a wee, you do nothing, just wipe and leave. If you do number two's chuck a handful of saw dust, provided in a bucket in the loo. Every so often some lucky chap with a tractor comes along and removes the sack to take off to goodness knows where and puts a clean one in. It's actually a perfectly pleasant experience, though it would be improved by the prescence of a proper sink rather than a stand pipe that gets pretty muddy. Hmm, maybe I should do a little blog post about this!

nappyaddict · 30/05/2012 15:07

Is the hole quite deep or can you see everyone's business?

Also have come across this Has anyone used one? Was thinking it could come in handy for Steeple Leaze Farm.

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 30/05/2012 15:09

I appear to have gone off on a tangent from Lulworth Cove Grin but another one in Ilfracombe that has been recommended is Watermouth Park Unfortunately another BBQ but no campfire site.

I will have to look at the yellow fields blog as so far have only come across recommended sites that allow campfires!

From what I've heard steepleleaze is a real "marmite" campsite-v basic, but big groups can get together (friends go for midsummer there) and they tend have the space to spread out ie you can avoid the group. It is v basic and tucked away in some v beautiful countryside!
Burnbake is the closest campsite to the vast sandy beaches. It used to be v chilled but as it has grown in popularity I've heard more mixed reviews with vampiric mossies and rampaging kids!

hz · 30/05/2012 20:15

Nappyaddict, it is quite a big hole, if you look you will prob see some loo paper and maybe some doings but that is the point of chucking the sawdust down, helps with odour control and to hide things. Kids do find it quite amusing that there is a gap under wooden shed, 'the drop' you might call it. My kids did a lot of giggling when they were standing outside and I was having a wee. But really, its not a problem, don't overthink it. and if you really can't face it there are a couple of 'normal' loos near the recpetion area.

topbannana · 31/05/2012 22:30

We stayed at Eweleaze last year (we only live a couple miles away!) and TBH I was not overly impressed. It poured the whole time we were there, which I accept was not the owners fault (I confess we decamped home at one point so the boys could play the Wii and keep at least one set of clothes dry!) and the place seemed quite randomly set up, as mentioned above perhaps a victim of its own success?

The shops were well stocked (when they were stocked- its only one month FFS, how hard can it be) but expensive. There was also a lot of stuff that was labelled "multipack only" which means they are buying in Tescos and splitting the boxes, then charging over the odds for it- tut tut tut! Good choice of food, but also very pricey and often sold out. Shower blocks reasonably clean but nothing to shout about, toilets basic, and yes, the boys were FASCINATED by the composting toilet (FWIW it was not too bad. I believe in giving anything a go but did traipse miles away to an uninhabited corner where I could savour the experience in privacy :o)

We also stayed at a sight near Kimmeridge whose name escapes me at the moment. Very basic but completely back to basics camping with a price to reflect this. Allowed campfires and pretty much anything else so long as it did not upset anyone else- thats my kind of camping :o

topbannana · 31/05/2012 22:34

Also worth mentioning that the wise folks at Weymouth council have made very few preperations for the Olympics, aside from banning almost every car from the local area. Loads of park n rides apparently (though the ones they ran in the past were s*) If you were planning to visit Weymouth or Portland specifically I would suggest not trying this year Angry

nappyaddict · 01/06/2012 11:32

I believe Steeple Leaze Farm is near Kimmeridge, was it there?

OP posts:
hz · 04/06/2012 18:45

Woops, just got wrists slapped for leaving link to my blog. Thought I was giving some useful info, so sorry if I broke the rules. Would like to know name of campsite near Kimmeridge - was it Steeple Leaze?

nappyaddict · 06/06/2012 10:51

Ooops hz I don't think you should have got your wrists slapped, I appreciated the info :)
